Join School of Love in partnership with the Drum Majors Alliance for our annual Black History Month Freedom Ride on Saturday, February 15th, from 3:30pm-6:00 pm. The Freedom Ride is a local pilgrimage that explores the untold stories of Black faith, courage, creativity, & power-building in the face of oppression. Quiet as kept, Black Winston-Salem has a rich and beautiful tradition of resistance. We must recover this history t work more effectively for healing & justice in the present. The Drum Majors Alliance has facilitated Freedom Rides since 2012 & hundreds of folks have had this incredible experience. Participants board a bus at the Old Salem Visitor Center and ride to historic sites in Winston-Salem. At each site, stories are lifted that demonstrate - in the words of James Baldwin - that “we are trapped in a history, & a history is trapped in us.”

This particular Freedom Ride is connected to an ongoing faith-rooted project for Black folks in the Triad, NC area called the “Hush Harbor Journey.” Hush Harbors were illegal & secret gatherings of enslaved Africans that were organized in pursuit of healing & liberation.

Go to bit.ly/freedomride25 to RSVP your spot! Link in bio.

(PLEASE NOTE: This FREE event is specifically for Black folks to have a community experience. Non-Black comrades are encouraged to support in spirit and be on the lookout for details on an “open-to-all” Freedom Ride in late February.)

Join us for a powerful discussion with Anthony Smith on May 16th at 6:30 pm on his chapter in the book “Liberating Church: A 21st Century Hush Harbor Manifesto.”

Anthony Smith is a poet, author, activist, city council member in Salisbury, NC, and the parish pastor of Mission House, a faith-rooted community hub in Salisbury.

This gathering is connected to a series of village gatherings & a cohort for Black folks in the triad area called “The Hush Harbor Journey.” The North Star had significant meaning for enslaved Africans who sought freedom. In our times, we need (faith) communities that help Black folks navigate collectively & individually toward freedom & healing justice.

The gathering will occur at The Hub Community Center at 502 N. Broad Street in Winston-Salem, NC. This gathering is for Black/African-descended people & is completely free. Light refreshments will be served!

Hello friends,

We invite Black folks in the Triad, NC area & beyond to join us for our 2nd Hush Harbor Journey Interest Gathering! Our first gathering was great, & upon village demand, we have scheduled one more interest-gathering dinner for Sunday, January 7th at 5:30 pm. Once again, the gathering will be held at 502 N Broad Street. (The Hub Community Ctr) We strongly encourage in-person attendance, however, if virtual works best for you, please RSVP for a virtual. All relevant links can be found in bio.

The “Hush Harbor Journey” is a 10-month cohort journey & series of public gatherings for Black folks in the Triad (NC) area who are seeking to learn & embrace the creative genius of our ancestors’ faith practices & to heal from the wounds of colonial Christianity. Hush harbors were illegal gatherings of enslaved Africans rooted in the Jesus story & routed towards toward healing justice & joy. Though unknown to so many, this powerful Black/African expression of faith remains relevant for those of us who seek intimacy with our Creator, unapologetic connection to our roots, wellness of spirit-body-mind, & the liberation of our people.

There are two tracts that one can participate in over the 10 months: the “cohort tract” or the “village tract.”

The cohort tract requires availability to engage in weekly & monthly rhythms like prayer, scripture meditation, breaking bread, & healing justice circles. It also includes two (all expenses paid) retreats & two pilgrimages! (One local pilgrimage retracing Winston-Salem’s Black freedom struggle & one to Montgomery, Alabama to encounter Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum & Lynching Memorial.)

The “village tract” will include African/Black-centered worship gatherings, teach-ins, healing justice actions, arts/cultural events, etc.

Invite a friend & join us to learn more!

In 2024, School of Love is facilitating two interrelated journeys. One, is our Hush Harbor Journey, specifically for Black folks. The second - which is the focus of this post - is the Contemplative Discipleship Journey! Amidst the hyperactive, digital, and ideological pressures of our age, we find the contemplative dimensions of the Faith to be increasingly important. In response, we are undertaking a year-long journey of contemplative discipleship in 2024, with the aim that disciples across Winston-Salem come to see and live in the world in a new kind of way. For more info inbox or email [email protected]. See link in bio for more details!
