"Know Your Purpose"

Beloved,

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

A doctor. A lawyer. A teacher. A professional athlete. A singer. An actor or actress.

For me, I wanted to be a basketball player or a rock star like Michael Jackson.

My formal basketball days ended in high school and I still enjoy singing, mostly making a joyful noise...I think...or perhaps just some noise that brings me joy.

You see, beloved, who we want to be does not always match up with who God has created us to be.

And, beloved, when we know who God has created us to be, then we will be living out our purpose and knowing our purpose will bring us our greatest and highest joy.

You see, beloved, in scripture, we can agree with David that we are fearfully and wonderfully made by God.

The Apostle Paul added in Ephesians 2:10, "For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life."

Beloved, said another way, "With God, you will find your purpose and reason for being."

Said another way, "Without God, your life can be like a rudderless ship. You will end up somewhere; but, will it be where you are supposed to be?"

Beloved, some of us are very dissatisfied with our lives and we do not have to be.

We need to turn to God, our Creator, and seek His wisdom and guidance for our lives such that what we want to be is much less important than who we are supposed to be.

And, beloved, you will be who you are supposed to be when you know your purpose and live into your purpose.

Beloved, as you seek God for your purpose, know that God will reveal your purpose for you to live into because God loves you and I love you too!

Be blessed,

“Prayer Changes Things”

Beloved,

When I was a member of North East Baptist Church in Durham, NC, I sang with the male chorus. The first song that I was asked to lead was entitled “Prayer Will”.

The song’s chorus was “I know that prayer will, prayer will, prayer will change things.”

Beloved, when we pray, we are not seeking a moment to emote our feelings although our prayers may be emotional; we are not seeking to just be heard by others although our prayers may be heard by others; and we are not seeking to get our way although our prayers may reveal what we believe we want and need in a moment.

Beloved, when we pray, we should seek, in the praying moment, to share with God what we are feeling; we should seek, in the praying moment, to invite others into the intimate conversation that we are having with God; and we should seek, in the praying moment, to seek God’s way for our lives despite, despite, despite what we believe that we want or need.

Said another way, beloved, we pray because we believe that God changes things and therefore we pray to God to change things.

James 5:13-16 tells us that prayer can end suffering, heal sickness, and bring forth the forgiveness of sin with the passage ending, “The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.”

Said another way, beloved, “Prayer changes things.”

Beloved, where do you need some change in your life - physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, in your health, in your wealth, in your relationships?

Said another way, beloved, is it time for you to pray?

Beloved, if you know, if you know, if you know that you know that you know that it is time to pray, then pray.

Pray yourself to God. Ask others to pray to God for you. And, pray to God with others.

Why? Because, beloved, prayer, prayer to God, will change things!

And, beloved, as you pray to God, always know that God stands ready to answer your prayers because God loves you and, beloved, I love you too!

Be blessed,
Rev. Cain
