A celebration of Life for Susan Akers will be held at our church tomorrow at 1:30pm
Susan Akers of Christiansburg, Virginia, passed away on May 13, 2021. Susan was born on September 19, 1980, to Steve and Shelby Akers in Christiansburg, Virginia. Susan got her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Kings University and Wytheville College of Nursing and worked as an ER nurse for many years. She got a Biblical Studies degree from Grace Baptist Bible College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and was very passionate about that school. Susan had a heart for helping others which made her very good at her job.
Susan was a wonderful daughter, sister, and aunt. She loved her family so much. They kept her company and helped her through her bad days. They were together until the very end. What a blessing!
Susan had a constant companion in her dog, Sunni Rae. There was never a dog so loved or so spoiled. Susan was always happy and cheerful when talking about Sunni. They were best friends and made each other very happy.
Susan grew up attending Open Door Baptist Church in Christiansburg, Virginia. It was during that time that she gave her heart to Christ. In 2008, Susan moved to Winston-Salem, NC. There she joined Heritage Hills Baptist Church. She quickly got involved and became a friend to all. Susan loved teaching Sunday school. She loved the kids and they loved her. She may not have ever had children of her own, but those children claimed Susan as their own. She gave of her time and money to mentor adolescent and teen girls. While this was not always an easy task, Susan never gave up on any of her kids.
Susan was a loyal friend. She could make you laugh. Her friends can attest that when Susan was around people had fun and felt important.
Susan loved to travel. Wherever she went, she made an impression. It was important to Susan to show God’s love by loving others. We will never know the full extent of the impact she made in people’s lives.
Susan was a happy, faithful servant of the Lord. She loved God more than anything, and proved that right up to the very end of her life. When she got sick, it was her desire to show Christ through her illness. Susan was an inspiration to all of what it means to love God and end well. What a great testimony she was! While her family and friends will miss her, they rest assured in the comfort that Susan is with her Lord and Savior. Susan is survived by her father, Steve Akers, her mother, Shelby Akers, her sister, Betty Jo Akers, her brother-in-law, Jay Akers, her niece, Taylor M. Akers, and Sunni Rae.
In lieu of flowers, Susan asked that money be donated to Grace Baptist Bible College in Winston-Salem, NC.
