Tisha B'av, the saddest day in the Jewish calendar, is this Sunday, August 7. On Tisha B'av, we commemorate the numerous tragedies that have happened to the Jewish people on or around the 10th of Av, most notably the destruction of the two Temples in Jerusalem.

We will be commemorating this Day of Mourning with a special service on Saturday, August 6 at 8 PM. Those who wish to attend may join us in-person or via LiveStream.

Temple Emanuel's Lifelong Learning program has hosted two Zoom lectures on Tisha B'av this year, both of which are available to stream on YouTube. The first lecture, "The First Temple and its Destruction," can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWaIgPC4BoQ
The second lecture, "Reading the Book of Lamentations," can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZTSHEsCDF0

To those who observe, we wish you a meaningful fast and mourning.

Some more great pictures of Sunday's Big Chill event, which raised over $35,000 for The Shalom Project of Winston Salem!! Check out their post to see Rabbi Charlie sitting on a big block of ice, musicians performing on the David Freedman stage, and more.

And don't forget, Shabbat is TONIGHT at 6 PM! Come see Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker, now an experienced "cold caller," as he leads us in prayer alongside Cantorial Soloist Jason McKinney, with piano accompaniment from Neal Maxey. Shabbat Shalom!

We are touched to see temple member and community icon David Freedman (z"l) honored at The Shalom Project of Winston Salem's Big Chill event. Temple Emanuel took home the Judges' Choice Award for a delicious Key Lime Pie ice cream that was created and served by temple volunteers! Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker also braved sitting on the giant block of ice and "cold calling" for the Shalom Project, all while observing the Fast of Tammuz.

We can't wait to show off our ice-cream making chops again next year, and we're so happy we could raise money for such a good cause! Thanks to all of our volunteers, donors, and our rabbi for their hard work!

Set up has begun!

Wishing Rabbi Mark a Yishar Koach (may he go on in strength) as he moves up to Massachusetts to be with his wife, Rabbi Amy Wallk. Curious about how they met? Check out this article from JTA News: https://www.jta.org/2022/06/17/religion/two-rabbis-from-two-different-denominations-get-a-second-chance-at-love

Neither Rabbi Amy Wallk nor Rabbi Mark Cohn were looking for love when they first met in 2017.

Mazel Tov to temple member Sam Zivin, winner of one of this year's Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Core Awards! According to temple member Bobby Stern: "He is only the 2nd Jewish educator to be honored with a district wide award since I was the 1992 WS/FC Schools Teacher of the Year. I think he deserves recognition."

We agree! On behalf of all of us here at Temple Emanuel, Mazel Tov, Yasher Koach...and Shabbat Shalom! (Don't forget--services are at 6 PM tonight 😉)
