512. Built on the Rock

The text is by Nikolai Grundtvig (1783-1872), a Lutheran bishop and educator. This hymn of 7 original stanzas first appeared in 1837 and in a revised form in 1854. It was translated into English by Carl Doving in 1913.

The tune Kirken was composed by Ludwig Mattias Lindeman (1812-1887), a Norwegian Lutheran organist. An earlier interest in theology was laid aside for his music. His collection of over 2500 tunes were preserved in a series of volumes between 1853 and 1867. This tune was composed for Gundtvig's text in 1840.
