Anne's is a congregation of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. Our history: In 1964, at the height of the Civil Rights era, Bishop Thomas Fraser (Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, 1965-1983) believed that committed people in Winston-Salem shared his dream to create a more racially diverse church. He asked leaders from the local Episcopal Churches -- St. Stephen’s and St. Tim
othy’s -- to go forth from their home churches and organize a new, intentionally diverse church community in Winston-Salem. This new creation chose the name “St. Anne’s,” in part to honor women who had only recently been granted the right to serve on vestries, and St. Anne’s became a small church with a big heart and a progressive mission. Fifty years later, St. Anne’s continues to be a small church with a big heart and a progressive mission! Born in turbulent times and founded for positive change, St. Anne’s has always stood up and spoken out as a witness for justice, peace and nonviolence.
