A note from our choir director and organist, Laura Hayworth:
The anthem for this Sunday (Oct 18) is an oldie but a goodie! I grew up singing it in the choir at Friedland and it has been sung at Christ Moravian for decades. “Now Let Us All Praise God and Sing” was composed by Gordon Young and published in 1956. It is a confident invitation to all us to raise our joyful voices in one accord to praise God. The recurring call to “sing alleluia” is a catchy musical figure that has stayed with me since the 1970s!
Most worship services are planned around a central theme, with the hymns, scripture readings, and special music intentionally woven together to help illuminate a particular aspect of faith or theme in scripture. It is always remarkable to me how thematic threads come together, sometimes in ways that no one involved in planning could have anticipated. I chose this anthem back in August. Reed didn’t know what I had chosen but when I received the order of worship for this Sunday, I found that Reed had chosen a call to worship that begins “The Lord is the Holy One of heaven. Let the earth quake with praise” and ends with “Thanks be to the Lord this day. Let us go to worship the Lord, our Creator.”
Psalm 96, which will be read right before the offertory, states, “Sing to the Lord, all the earth…..For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise. Let the heavens rejoice, let the fields be jubilant, let all the trees of the forest sing for joy [I just love this imagery!!]. Let all creation rejoice before the Lord!” AMEN!!
This Sunday (and every time you worship), I encourage you to listen for the recurring ideas, images, and messages that weave their way through the service. Those connections often become the most meaningful moments of worship, reminding us that while we prepare faithfully, the Holy Spirit is still at work, drawing together hearts, minds, and voices in ways that surprise and inspire us.
