Shady Grove Cemetery, Wood County, Winnsboro, Texas

Shady Grove Cemetery, Wood County, Winnsboro, Texas One of the earliest area settlers was Reuben Elledge, who brought his family here in 1845. One acre of the Elledge land was later set aside for the cemetery.

Shady Grove Cemetery is an open landscape cemetery and one of the oldest burial grounds in Wood County, having first served pioneer settlers of the Shady Grove farming community. Elledge figured prominently in the development of Wood County as a Commissioner and Chief Justice (County Judge) in 1850. Elledge donated land to the community for a school and a Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The ear

liest known gravesite in Shady Grove Cemetery, unmarked except for a tree for many years, was for young Bobby Scoggins, who drowned in 1855. Also buried here are Elledge as well as three-term Wood County Sheriff, John Boyd, and many veterans of military conflicts dating to the Civil War. Expanded throughout the years, Shady Grove Cemetery is a reminder of early settlement in the area. Features include rock cairns, decorative fencing, ornate stone carvings, old curbed plots, obelisks, and Woodmen of the World monuments. The Methodist Church, later having become a United Methodist Church, was disbanded in 1993, and it is now used for funerals and for annual events such as Memorial Day and the old-time Pie & Box Supper.

The Annual Box & Pie Supper and Live Auction 2026 was held on Saturday evening, April 25, 2026, at 4:00 pm. This was the 109th Box Supper event in Shady Grove history. Thirty fantastic cemetery supporters were in attendance. Larry Finney auctioned fifty-six various donated items, ranging from pies to craft items (baby quilts, table runners, rope bowls) to cakes to full-course meals to fried pies to plants. Much appreciation to all who donated auction items. Larry was assisted by Kathy Brewer Brown and Sally Bellomy Richardson, making it a fun time for all. Belinda Baber Riley, Marilyn Browning Burrow, and Sherry Mills Finney assisted in recordkeeping.

The winning quilt ticket was drawn by Blaine Moore, daughter of Ronnie and Alicia Banks Moore, all of Winnsboro, TX. Blaine is the granddaughter of Mike and Elaine Tinney Banks, and the great-granddaughter of the late Donald and Corinne Matheson Tinney. The winner of the Texas-themed quilt was Margaret “Snuckie” Bradshaw Stephens, a true Texas aficionado. She fully embodies the Texas spirit of friendliness, hospitality, and independence. Her life encompasses a love of family, the land, and her home, which coincidentally is beautifully decorated Texas-style. She is a descendent of the Bradshaw and Russom families who migrated from Alabama to the Shady Grove community in the late 1800’s. Her mother, Margrit Luise Adler, was born in Hamburg, Germany, and came to Texas as a war bride of Arnold Junior “A.J.” Bradshaw in the 1940’s. All are buried at Shady Grove Cemetery. A special thank you to Totsie Churchill, descendant of the Baker family, for donating this unique quilt. Totsie, you may rest assured your beautiful handiwork will be loved and appreciated for years to come.

Funds earned from this longtime traditional event were $4,406, which included live auction proceeds, quilt ticket sales, and mailed and electronic donations prior to the event. Additional mailed and electronic donations after the event were $2,035, for a grand total of $6,441. Funds earned will benefit the perpetual care of the cemetery. Thank you to all our fabulous cemetery supporters! Without your continued support, achievements like this would not be possible.
