Shady Grove Cemetery, Wood County, Winnsboro, Texas One of the earliest area settlers was Reuben Elledge, who brought his family here in 1845. One acre of the Elledge land was later set aside for the cemetery.

Shady Grove Cemetery is an open landscape cemetery and one of the oldest burial grounds in Wood County, having first served pioneer settlers of the Shady Grove farming community. Elledge figured prominently in the development of Wood County as a Commissioner and Chief Justice (County Judge) in 1850. Elledge donated land to the community for a school and a Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The earliest known gravesite in Shady Grove Cemetery, unmarked except for a tree for many years, was for young Bobby Scoggins, who drowned in 1855. Also buried here are Elledge as well as three-term Wood County Sheriff, John Boyd, and many veterans of military conflicts dating to the Civil War. Expanded throughout the years, Shady Grove Cemetery is a reminder of early settlement in the area. Features include rock cairns, decorative fencing, ornate stone carvings, old curbed plots, obelisks, and Woodmen of the World monuments. The Methodist Church, later having become a United Methodist Church, was disbanded in 1993, and it is now used for funerals and for annual events such as Memorial Day and the old-time Pie & Box Supper.

Belinda Baber Riley, one of our Shady Grove Cemetery directors, has an important prayer request. Her son, Jeremy Baber, has recently been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He has a good attitude and is positive about upcoming treatments, but this has been devastating news to his mother, daughters, and all the family. Belinda is asking for prayers for Jeremy as he fights this cancer battle. He has lots of community and family support and a benefit is being planned for him on Sun., Sept. 27, 3:00-8:00 pm, at the Bowery in Winnsboro. More details will be shared as I receive them. There will be a flyer forthcoming soon about the benefit.

Please pray for Jeremy!💙🙏🏻 Dear Lord, give Jeremy unshakeable strength when he feels weary, clear direction when the path ahead is uncertain, and a deep sense of Your peace that guards his mind and heart. Please give his doctors, other medical professionals, and his caregivers the skills and knowledge needed to help Jeremy fight and overcome this cancer. Amen.

Very sad to report the loss of Nancy Browning Stewart’s husband, Sidney, age 87. Nancy is Marilyn Browning Burrow’s older sister. Sidney and Nancy have always been wonderful Shady Grove Cemetery supporters and passed on that tradition to their children, who also support our cemetery. Sidney will be interred in Commerce. Say a little prayer for the Browning and Stewart families as Sidney is laid to rest tomorrow, Sat., Aug. 8, 2026. Benton Burrow

JUST A REMINDER…Memorial Day services for Shady Grove Cemetery will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., in the old Shady Grove Methodist Church building. Mack Jordan will be the guest speaker. Mack was born and raised in Winnsboro, Texas. He is the owner and manager of J&M Signs, an active member of Crossroads Baptist Church, an Eagle Scout, and enjoys camping. Ron and Cathy Lawson, locally renowned musicians, will present the music. The annual business meeting will be held with Larry Finney presiding. The deceased from August 1, 2025-July 31, 2026, will be commemorated.

Dan Fogle, owner of Circle J Heat & Air, Dallas area heat and air conditioning business, will provide portable AC units for the church. Remember to bring a covered dish for the potluck lunch to be enjoyed after the services. Dress in cool attire and bring a lawn chair to enjoy sitting and visiting under the pavilion after services and during lunch. Depending upon the weather, however, lunch may be served inside the church building.
