Pachamama is the Andean Earth Mother and fertility Goddess. She is worshipped and revered by indigenous people across the Andes. She is the mother who nourishes and sustains all living beings. She fertilizes the fields and brings abundance to the people of the land. Inti, the Sun God, is her counterpart as the Andean people believed in duality. Her relationship with the Andean people was based on reciprocity, humans care for the Earth, and in return, Pachamama provided a bountiful harvest and protection.

The sound of Bee humming is emulated in Vedic chants and the humming of Bees represent the sound of the universe all across India. It was said that the demon, Arun, quested for power and to conquer the divine beings. To stop Arun, the goddess Parvati changed into Bhramari Devi, that called forth all bees, wasps, and hornets that clung to her body and emanated from her four hands.

Atargatis: The World’s First Mermaid.
Long long ago in the land of Assyria, Atargatis reigned over her people. She was as beloved as she was beautiful by her subjects. Every morning when Atargatis opened her window to greet her people, she could hear them chanting her name in great cheers that could be heard for miles. One day as Atargatis was riding as she usually did, she came upon a small flock of sheep in a field. Atargatis was taken aback by the young sheep herder’s looks. Both locked eyes and instantly fell in love. Before long, Atargatis and Hadad were joined in marriage. Her subjects accepted their queens new king and cheered for the newly wedded couple. That night a large feast was held for the happy couple. Hadad, especially enjoyed the flowing drinks all night. He wanted to entertain his guests and of course his beloved wife. Long horned cattle had been given to the happy couple as a wedding gift from a neighboring kingdom that day. Hadad, heavily intoxicated, began to leap over the wedding cattle to show off his bravery and fearlessness. Atargatis would laugh and cheer every time Hadad cleared the sharp horns, goading him on. Atargatis begged her beloved Hadad to jump one more time for her. Hadad smiled and bowed to his queen. He took a long heavy drink from his cup and bowed once more to his beloved Atargatis before he leaped over the cattle. Unfortunately, Hadad did not clear the sharp horns this time and was sadly impaled upon them. As his limp body hung upon the cattle's horn, Atargatis screamed in sorrow. What was meant to be a happy joyful occasion had now become a sad somber event. Hadad was laid to rest and the country mourned his passing, but none mourned as much as Atargatis. Her heart was broken, and the love of her life was gone. Even though her people still cheered for her she no longer went to the window to greet her people or rode across the countryside. Finally, her pain was too much for her to bear any longer and Atargatis stole away from the castle to the ocean shore. As the tears fell from her eyes, Atargatis walked into the ocean. She walked until the ocean water was up to her neck. She gazed to the heavens and whispered Hadad’s name once more before she sank beneath the waves. The God's looked down upon Atargatis and took pity upon her as did the ocean itself. They did not want to lose her beauty forever, so the God's granted her a new life with the ocean. Atargatis opened her eyes and looked around her new watery home as she realized she could breathe, just the same as she did on land. She glanced down to her waist and realized that the ocean had taken her legs and given her the tail of a beautiful fish. She spends eternity under the ocean continuing to watch over her people even to this day.
Atargatis was the first known legend of mermaids from Syria dating back to farther than 300 B.C. She is the mother of the mermaids and her tale continues to live on to this day.

Hraf-Hef
In Kemet, Hraf-Hef, the ferryman of the Duat. Once your soul has gone through its trials and been weighed in the Hall of Two Truths it still has another task. Once the soul has passed through the hall they go to the shores of Lily Lake. Once the soul is there they are met by none other than Hraf-Hef, the ferryman. Hraf-Hef is known as He-Who-Looks-Behind-Him and is the Celestial Ferryman that is tasked to ferry the souls of the deceased to the Field of Reeds but he is also the last test in the souls journey to eternity. He is a very sour and extremely unpleasant. His demeanor is only rivaled by his grotesque appearance. What is the final task you may ask? Well, no matter how insulting Hraf-Hef is or how grotesque his appearance may be, you MUST always be courteous to him. I know some of you are probably laughing right now at that. It may seem such a trivial thing, but if you are not kind to him, Hraf-Hef will immediately turn back and leave you at the shore. The whole point of the journey through the Duat is to finally meet your loved ones in the Field of Reeds. By being rude to Hraf-Hef, it shows your self-worth of not continuing the journey in the afterlife. Hraf-Hef is referenced specifically in the Book of the Dead. Certain spells could be used to placate him and essentially persuade him into ferrying the soul. In earlier times he was also said to be one of the Forty-Two in the Hall of Judgement. It is believed Hraf-Hef was used as the creation of Charon, the Greek Ferryman. He is depicted normally as a figure with his head pointed behind him.

What is a Maypole?
Happy Beltane!
One of the staples of Beltane for many centuries is the Maypole dance. What is the Maypole and why is it important to the Sabbat, Beltane?
Beltane is the summer solstice sabbat celebrating fertility and vitality, as well as the peak of spring and the coming of summer. Beltane is celebrated on May 1st around the world. Usually, a staple of Beltane celebration is the May Pole Dance. This was usually observed by Druids, Germanic Tribes, and the Romans. The tree used for the Maypole is chosen and erected as a ph***ic symbol for the Green man and is adorned with ribbon and decorations. Couples, young maidens, and children can all partake in the dancing of the maypole that is the union of the masculine and feminine! In some instances, the maypole is taken down and then burned in the ceremonial bonfire at night. In different parts of the world Maypoles are still used today for celebrating Beltane/May Day.
Beltane Blessings to All!

Merry Winter Solstice!

The longest night has come and gone and we are personally looking forward to the longer and warmer days that are ahead. Winter festivals often reveled in the rebirth or returnal of the sun, and featured feasting, revelry, and the adornment of greenery around grayer/whiter landscapes.

The Germanic people celebrated this occasion through Yule, which gave us the traditions of the Yule tree, the Yule log, and Wassailing. Saturnalia, although not publicly practiced much in modern days, was the Roman equivalent winter festival that focused on the god Saturn and the coming warm weather.

As we pray to keep Jack Frost and Old Man Winter from extending their stay, make sure to light a candle, give an offering to your preferred deity, and give gifts to your loved ones. My personal opinion has always been that winter festivals were an opportunity to reach out and check in with your loved ones and neighbors. After all, the winter is harsh and there wasn’t always a guarantee that everyone would see the next spring.

How do you celebrate during the Winter season?
