SUMMARY
What does it really mean to be called and sent by God?
In Acts 13, we encounter a church made up of very different people. Different backgrounds, cultures, histories, and experiences. People who, on paper, might not seem to belong together. Yet the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have called them by name, drawn them together, and caught them up in one shared life and mission.
In this Gospel-centered message, Pastor Tim reminds us that the Christian life is not primarily about trying harder to do something for God. It is about being drawn by the Holy Spirit into participation in what the Father is already doing with us and for us in Jesus Christ.
Before Barnabas and Saul are sent anywhere, the church is together, worshiping, fasting, listening, and participating in the life they have already been given in Jesus. They do not begin with their own strategy for what they can accomplish for God.
God has already been at work. And it is here that Pastor Tim brings us to the first movement of this message: We’re sent together in knowing, loving, and worshiping with Jesus.
In the midst of their worship, the Holy Spirit makes known the work to which He has already called them. God takes the initiative. He calls. He draws us together. He sends and we are invited to participate, and that changes how we understand both worship and mission.
Pastor Tim puts it powerfully:
“Worship is not an audition. It’s a participation where you’re participating with Jesus in His worship that’s always acceptable before the Father.”
Jesus has taken our humanity to Himself. His worship carries our worship. His prayer carries our prayer. His faithfulness carries us. Through the Holy Spirit, we are invited to participate in Jesus’ own relationship with His Father. And we are not called into that life alone.
“The church is about togetherness because God is about togetherness.”
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit draw ordinary, different, and sometimes seemingly mismatched people together, not because we have everything together, but because God has called us to participate together in what Jesus is already doing.
We do not have to create the mission.
We do not carry it by ourselves.
And we do not have to make the results happen.
We are called together.
We worship together.
We participate together.
And we are sent together with Jesus.
REFLECTIVE MOMENT
What if following Jesus is less about asking, “What can I do for God?” and more about asking: “Jesus, what are You already doing, and how are You inviting us to participate with You?”
Are we beginning with our own plans and strategies or are we learning to worship, listen, and recognize that God was already at work before we arrived? And when He calls your name, how are you responding?
