Faith, Hope and Love - A Powerful Reputation, 1 Thessalonians 1:7-8, 3
The words of exhortation to the Corinthians are now the words of encouragement and praise to the Thessalonians. They are words that sum up the Christian life: faith, love and hope. In the first verses of the first chapter of (possibly) the first book of the New Testament Paul sets forth a guiding standard: a life of work because of our faith, a life labor motivated by love, and a life of steadfastness because of our hope in Christ. Of all the things people want to be noticed for these days, this triad is why we should be noticed as followers of Christ.

Speaking of the pagan Roman populus, who had no particular love for Christians, Tertullian (3rd century) writes of their reaction to Christians: see how they love each other. Writing of the character of the church in those early centuries, Pastor Rick Harrington notes: the early church practiced radical love, a love that stood out to the world around them. When the world takes notice, they [listen to] the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Let's talk about love.

Faith, Hope and Love: Hope; 1 Corinthians 13:13; Romans 5:1-13
Writing of Romans 15:13, Alastair Begg says that we find the hope of God "simply by knowing the God of hope." God, through the powerful ministry of his word, generates hope in us. He then becomes the object of our hope and the one who strengthens how our hope is lived out. Jesus Christ, in the words of Phil Wickham, is our living hope, and lives in us to enable our hope to overflow, for our own good and the good of those around us. This hope produces joy, peace and energy. Praise the Lord!

Faith, Hope and Love: Faith
And now these three things remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13) When all is said and done you can have everything in life, but if you don't have faith, hope and love you have nothing. On the other hand, you can lose everything in life, but if you have faith, hope and love you actually have everythng you ultimately need. These three present the core of the Christian life. They were grounding for the troubled church in the first century. They are grounding and equipping today.
