It used to be that over the last decade or so I would spend lots of time writing about controversial subjects that most of the church did not want to talk about. Now it seems though there is no place to share or write where we can actually have "freedom of speech". The snow flakes have won it seems and tough topics can't be broached unless they are approved by poorly paid "fact checkers".
Over the last few months though I have begun to consider a saying I heard some years ago: "so goes the church so goes the nation" ... Like it or not this was founded a nation under the God of the Bible... in 1982 News Week did great research and wrote a great article on how the Bible was more the founding document of the U.S. than was the constitution... but I digress.
What I have begun to consider is that we ( the church in America ) are the ones who started the "cancel culture". Consider how we behave when: We find out someone is divorced, oh they shouldn't be preaching we shouldn't be hearing from them .. cancel. We find out a preacher has sin in his life ... cancel. We hear a person of a different denomination .. cancel.... when we hear a scripture from a Bible translation we don't approve of .. cancel ... when we hear some doctrine we disagree with ...cancel .
The religious folks in Jesus day even tried to cancel him did they not ? Had a man share with me one time that "we learn most from people we do not agree with" ... we are so quick to cancel anyone with a differing opinion yet we take no time to glean and consider that some of what they believe may be true or that ( God forbid the thought ) we ourselves might actually be wrong about something!
Cancel Culture folks ... we need to stop blaming "them" .. it was us, it was the church that started it. If we won't listen to and respect one another in the Body of Christ then how can we expect the world to emulate such a thing ?
There are simply to many examples in the Bible of religious folks trying to "cancel" ( dismiss ) people they disagreed with ... even one where Paul dismisses Mark but later on says he is a "profit to his ministry" ...
Thinking of it, maybe we are even encouraged to cancel others with differing opinions because of leaders who are insecure in their own reasoning ... hmmm ...
