Winchester Church of Christ

Winchester Church of Christ We are simply a group of Christians who have a desire to serve God and be pleasing in His sight as w

We diligently strive to teach only things found in the Holy Scriptures. We want to be found "speaking as the oracles of God" (1 Peter 4:11). For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:27-28 NKJV)

Jesus: The Son of God (Part 2)

The truth about Jesus.
The Biblical view of Jesus.
The godly claimed that He was the Son of God:
The Father said so: Mt 3:17, Mt 17:5.
John the Baptist said so: Jn 1:29-34.
The Apostles said so: Mt 16:13-16, Acts 9:18-20.
b. The ungodly knew He claimed to be the Son of God:
The Devil knew it and called on Him to prove it: Mt 4:3-7.
The Demons knew and confessed it: Mt 8:28-29.
The Jews condemned Him for it: Jn 19:7.
c. His claim was validated by what He did:
His works proved it: Mt 14:32-33.
His death proved it: Mt 27:54.
His resurrection proved it: Rom 1:3-4.

B. Religious errors:
2. The Muslim view of Jesus.
They affirm the virgin birth, miracles, that God was with Jesus, that He ascended to Heaven, and that He will return as a judge.
They deny that Jesus died on the cross, that He rose from the dead, and that He is the Son of God.
3. The Jewish view of Jesus.
They affirm that Jesus was a historical man who walked the earth.
They deny the virgin birth, miracles, that God was with Jesus, that He ascended into Heaven, that He will return as a judge, and that He is the Son of God.
4. The Hindu view of Jesus.
They affirm that Jesus was a historical man, believing Him to be an “avatar” (manifestation of the divine on Earth); they view Him as one of their 300 million “gods.”
They deny that there is only one God, that Jesus’ death atoned for sin, that Jesus is the only way to salvation, and that He is the only begotten Son of God.
5. The Buddhist view of Jesus.
They affirm that Jesus was an enlightened teacher and “a son of God.”
They deny that there is a single creator God, defining God as a reality or as truth itself; they therefore deny that Jesus was God’s literal Son in the flesh.

C. Why do we need to study about Jesus’ Sonship?
It is a vital part of the Gospel message: Acts 9:20
We must believe and confess it: Acts 8:37.
We must believe in the Son in order to have life: 1 Jn 5:9-13.

Sunday, June 14th, morning handout.
Jesus: The Son of God (Part 1)

The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus is God’s Son.
Jesus is regularly called “the Son of God.” Mk 1:1, Heb 4:14, Rom 8:3, Mt 3:13-17, Mt 17:1-5.

II. Why is Jesus called “the Son of God”?
To express His nature—He is Divine. (John 5:18)
To express a distinction between Him and the Father. (Mt 3:13-17)
To express His role/relationship in the Godhead. (Jn 5:30, 1 Cor 11:3)

III. How is Jesus’ Sonship different from that of others?
A son by creation: Those God personally created are referred to as “sons of God.”
Angels: Job 38:4-7, Ps 89:6, Job 1:6, Job 2:1.
Adam: Luke 3:38.
2. A son by adoption: Those who God chooses for His own through Jesus’ atonement.
We are adopted as sons of God: Eph 1:5, Rom 8:14-17, Gal 3:26, 1 Jn 3:1.
3. A son by begetting: One who is of God’s own nature.
Jesus is God’s only “begotten” son: Jn 1:14, Jn 3:16.
b. We are begotten in a spiritual sense (born again): 1 Jn 5:1, Jn 3:1-8.

IV. Errors to avoid:
Jesus is God’s Son because the Father “made Him.” (John 1:1, 1:3, Col 1:16-17).
Jesus became God’s Son at baptism (John 3:16, 1 Jn 4:9).
The idea was carried over from paganism.

Sunday evening sermon handout, June 7th.

“I shall not be moved.”
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

What does “I shall not be moved” mean?
To be moved - “to waver, compromise, or to give up.”
To not be moved - “to stand firm, to not compromise, to not give up.”

B. Example: Paul the Apostle was not moved. (Acts 20:17-24)
V. 24 “None of these things move me.” – “I do not take them into account.”
Most would have given up if they went through what Paul did…
He gave up everything: Phil 3:4-8.
He was beaten and imprisoned: Acts 16:19-24.
He was stoned: Acts 14:19-20.
He was criticized even by those he suffered to help: 2 Cor 10:10.

C. These passages tell us the characteristics of the person who will not be moved:
Ps 15:1-5 Those who… A. Are upright and righteous. B. Speak the truth. C. Do not slander, reproach, or do evil to their neighbors. D. Regard the vile as condemned and God-fearers as honored. E. Keep their promises even to their own disadvantage. F. Do not lend money at exorbitant interest or take bribes.
Ps 16:8 Those who set the Lord before them shall be in His presence and shall not be moved.
This passage is applied to Jesus in Acts 2:25-28.
Ps 55:22 Those who cast their cares upon God (1 Peter 5:7).

D. Things that shouldn’t move us away from our devotion for Christ:
Fear.
Loss.
Pleasure.
Goals.
Death.

Sermon handout for Sunday morning, June 7th.
“Simplicity”
“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:3).

Definition:
The word simple has a few different usages.
Not complicated (straightforward).
Innocent (pure).
Plain (not extravagant).

Simplicity is not bad—Jesus chose to be simple
His birth was simple—laid in a manger. (Luke 2:7, 12, 16)
His profession was simple—a carpenter. (Mark 6:2-3)
His appearance was simple—He looked like other men. (Is 53:2)
His bank account was simple—Jesus often didn’t even have a bed. (Lk 9:58, 2 Cor 8:9)
His preaching was simple—everyone understands salt and light. (Mt 5:13-16)
His death was simple—He died the death of a common criminal. (Lk 23:32-33)

The Gospel is simple (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)
Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.
He died for our sin,
He was buried.
He rose again the third day.
He did this because of coming judgment (Rom 2:16).
He did this so we can have hope in Heaven (Col 1:5).
He did this so everyone could be saved (Rom 1:16).
“Jesus is the Christ who died for the world’s sin, was buried, and rose again the third day to save us from coming judgment so we might have hope in Heaven.”

The Gospel is so simple that one can learn enough in one sermon to be saved
Acts 2:37-41 The people at Pentecost.
Acts 8:31-39 The Eu**ch.
Acts 16:30-34 The Philippian Jailer.

The plan of salvation is simple
Everyone can hear (Rom 10:13-17)
Everyone can believe what they hear (Acts 15:7)
Everyone can acknowledge/confess that they believe (2 Cor 4:13)
Everyone can change (Acts 26:20)
Everyone can be dipped in water (1 Pet 3:21)

Jesus loves simplicity: He led a simple life, chose a simple Gospel, and made a simple plan of salvation—we should simply follow it.
