Winchester Church of Christ We are Christian people who love God and one another. We would love to have you come worship with us. on Wednesday we have a Bible study at 7:00 PM.

Every Sunday we have a Bible study at 9:30 AM, and worship services at 10:30 AM and 5:00 PM. We diligently strive to teach only things found in the Holy Scriptures. We want to be found "speaking as the oracles of God" (1 Peter 4:11). For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female;

for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:27-28 NKJV)

Saints

Why study about sainthood?
The word is commonly misunderstood.
Being a saint comes with certain blessings and responsibilities.

What does the word “saint” mean?
The New Testament word translated “saint” (Hagios) is the same word translated as “holy”; it literally means “set apart.”

What the Bible says:
One becomes a saint by being sanctified (1 Cor 1:2, 2 Th 2:13, Heb 13:12, 1 Cor 6:11).
Every child of God is a saint (Heb 2:11).
Saints can be either living or dead (Acts 9:36-42, Mt 27:50-52).
We are called by the Gospel to be saints (1 Cor 1:2, 2 Th 2:13-14).
Saints are to live holy lives (1 Pet 1:15-16, Eph 4:1, Eph 5:1-3, 1 Th 4:1-4, 7).
Saints have an inheritance to look forward to (Eph 1:18-19, Col 1:10-14).

Common Errors:
Erroneous secular view: A very moral person (one can be moral without being Christian).
Erroneous Religious view: (Some other groups believe very similarly):

The process of becoming a saint:
One cannot be declared a saint till at least 5 years after their death.
One’s life will be examined for extreme piety, after which they will be declared as “venerable.”
After being declared as venerable, they will be prayed to until they “perform a miracle”; after which they will be “beatified” (if they died as a martyr, no miracle is needed).
After beatification, they must perform a second miracle; after which, they will be “canonized” (officially declared to be a saint) by the Pope.
Fulton Sheen is a recent example of this process.

2. Such "saints" are often…
Venerated.
Prayed to (Ecc 9:5-6, 10).
Believed to play a part in miracles.

3. Exaggerated beliefs on Mary express the danger of misunderstanding sainthood.
Many teach that Mary…
Is the greatest of saints and is to be venerated above all humans and angels.
Can hear and answer our prayers (Ecc 9:5-6, 10).
Loves us more than Christ and can convince Him to forgive us.
Never sinned (Rom 3:23, Ecc 7:20, 1 Jn 1:8-10).
Mary was so holy she felt no pain in childbirth.
Mary ascended to Heaven, body and soul, to be crowned as Queen (Jn 3:13).
