Preacher ponderings………..by David Mallory

Abram was from the land of Ur, an ancient city located in the modern day country of Iran. It was a land rich in resources and wealth. While still living with his father, he met and married Sarai, the love of his life. The family amassed an abundance of fortunes. Life was good. Life was comfortable. Abram would have done well to live out the remainder of his days right where he was.

But God called. God beckoned Abram to leave this comfortable lifestyle and to travel to an unnamed land and incubate God’s chosen people. It could not have been an easy decision. To leave what we know and to venture into what we do not know can be very unsettling. But Abram went because God called and Abram knew that God would never forsake him.

God calls again. After twelve months with you, God is beckoning Wilson’s Mills Christian Church into a new chapter. And it will not be easy. To leave behind what we know and venture into what we do not know can be very unsettling. But we go because God calls and God will never forsake us.

As we go, please know that I am grateful and humbled to have shared this part of the journey with you. As we part, I can assure you that our paths will cross again. “Blest be the tie that binds,” states the old hymn, “our hearts in Christian love. The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.” See you Sunday.

Preacher ponderings………..by David Mallory

It was just a casual conversation. One that might occur over the water cooler at work or across the lunch counter at school or in the theater seats prior to the movie.

“Are you a practicing Christian?” I heard one fellow query to the other.

“I guess you could say that I’ve been practicing all my life,” the other retorted. “But I just can’t seem to get it right.”

In this world of so many distractions and temptations, it is difficult to hold firmly to the teachings of Jesus Christ. How do we love our enemies when our enemies want to continually do us harm? How do we deny our flesh when promiscuous sexuality is splashed all over our social media screens? How do we care for the oppressed when personal wealth and success are hyper-glorified by our culture? Try as we might to live our faith, every one of us struggles to get it right.

But we must remember that faith is a journey, not a destination. It is about growing in our relationship with Christ. It is about striving every day to love our neighbor and to deny our flesh and to care for the oppressed. Faith is as much about effort as it is about achievement.

Peter thought he had enough faith. He thought he was righteous enough to walk out on the water and meet Jesus. So he tried. And he failed. But in his failure, Jesus reaches out and picks him up.

So we keep practicing, knowing that even when we fail, God is there to pick us up. See you Sunday.

Preacher ponderings………..by David Mallory

Recently, my ten year old granddaughter uncovered an atlas in the back seat of my car. “What’s
this?” she inquired flipping through the pages.

“It’s an atlas,” I inquired with a snicker on my face.

“What’s an atlas?”

“It’s a book of maps that helps you decide where you want to go.”

“We don’t need one of those,” she confidently responded. “Mama’s phone tells us where to
go.”

It is easier to be told where to go instead of deciding where to go. As we enter this period of ministerial transition, Wilson’s Mills Christian Church is living in this tension of deciding where to go or being told where to go. Who is God calling to be our new pastor? What changes will occur? What traditions will we hold onto? What new ministries will we embrace?

As believers, we often struggle to navigate this tenuous line between God’s will and human initiative. I firmly believe that God has purpose for each of us, but I also believe that God does not map out every turn and exit of our journey. We must seek God’s guidance and wisdom and then discern how we can take that guidance and wisdom and pilot the journey ahead. As the Episcopalian priest Barbara Brown Taylor once said, “we must believe that whatever is going on, God is in it and God can be trusted.”

The author of Proverbs understands this delicate divine-human dance. “In their hearts humans plan the course,” he writes, “but the Lord establishes the steps.” See you Sunday.
