A Christian funerals a dual statement of faith. On the one hand, we proclaim with joy the grace of God which was evident in the life of the deceased. On the other hand, we affirm our belief that death is not the end of our existence, but a passing to a new and transformed existence. Thus, though we are saddened at the loss of an individual's presence, we are empowered to worship in gladness for the goodness of God.

At the heart of our faith is the Easter story which celebrates Jesus' resurrection from the grave. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too shall be raised into everlasting life. As Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:8, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord". Jesus, himself, told the repentant thief who was crucified next to him, "Today you will be with me in Paradise."

These promises, however, do not make human grief unchristian. The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend, Lazarus. So, while we rejoice that one we love has entered into eternal life with God, we still hurt in sympathy with those who mourn.
