True discipleship is costly but consider the alternative. Consider for a moment the cost of non-
discipleship. In other words, what is the cost involved if we are not true disciples, investing our
lives in the making of true disciples? Who will make true disciples? On the surface, it may seem
like it will cost us nothing, even though others may pay the price for our non-discipleship.

A closer look reveals that believers lose greatly, along with the world when there is no
discipleship:
-We lose the opportunity to be obedient to God and thus pleasing to Him.
-We also pay the price of a lesser life.
-We pay the high price of never living fully for what we were created
-We pay the price of generational loss. We have the opportunity to significantly impact
the next generation, which will affect the next one, which will impact the one after.

Discipleship: “is a journey of intentional decisions leading to maturity in your relationship with Jesus so that you become more like Him in your attitudes, focus and ultimately behavior.” (https://buff.ly/UKU0p6)

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is the author of numerous books, including one entitled “The Cost of Discipleship.” In this book, he speaks against “cheap grace” that we want to extend to ourselves, “grace without discipleship.” Bonhoeffer contrasts this with what he understands to be the costly grace of true discipleship. This is the grace that costs an individual everything, as stated by Bonhoeffer’s famous quote, “When Christ calls a man, He bids him ‘come and die.’” This is the cost of the discipleship Jesus spoke of when He said things like, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” There is a significant cost connected to genuine Christian discipleship.

Jeremiah 29:13 (ESV) You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

Praise you Lord, for always being near! We seek you, your face, your guidance, wisdom, provision, and peace today. We lay aside all distractions, worries and burdens to solely focus on your glory at this moment. On behalf of our community of missionaries, we pray that your presence would be felt among them, near and far. Where there is darkness, would your truth reign supremely, illuminating hidden things and shining your light in hopeless situations. Where there is dry ground, please bring your rivers of living water bringing joy and energy to face the day. We long for our eyes to be fixed on you today, and always!

We have a growing interest in understanding “God’s glory” as it relates to missions. In the 300+ times “glory” appears in scripture, sometimes it’s a noun, a verb, or an adjective. I wanted to put it in my own words.

Glory is:
• The excellence of who God is and what he has done/is doing
• Recognizing & Ascribing His excellence
• Honoring His excellence with public thanks and praise

“… the time is coming to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory, 19 and I will set a sign among them. And from them I will send survivors to the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands far away, that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my glory among the nations. (Isaiah 66:18-19)

“…is even at the right hand of God,
Who always lives to make intercession…
for the saints according to the will of God”
(Rom 8:34, Heb 7:25 & Rom 8:27)

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭9‬:‭6‬ ‭ESV

It is because of this gift of Jesus, this Prince of Peace, that we give everything we have to serve Him. We have such a wonderful savior and we want EVERYONE to have a chance to meet Him! He is so good, and that’s why we spread the Great News of His sacrificial love

What do we have in common with Abraham, Moses, Esther, Ananias, and many others? They were all told to “GO” and each had a choice whether or not to obey. Each made, quite literally, a life-or-death decision with many unknowns. Abraham was told to: Get out of your country and go to a land I will show you. Moses was told: Go for I am sending you. Esther was urged to: Go to the king to make supplication and plead for her people… Esther’s reply to Mordecai was “...if I perish, I perish!” Ananias was told to: go pray for Saul’s healing (Saul’s reputation being a persecutor and murderer was well known).

And we, likewise, have been told by the One who holds all earthly and heavenly authority to “go and make disciples of all the nations…” and “that we will be His witnesses… even to the ends of the earth.” That word “witnesses” is the same Greek word translated “martyrs.” Sometimes, going can be a life-or-death decision and there are always unknowns.

What about you? Are you willing to go? As John Piper once stated: We have three options in responding to Christ’s Great Commission - Go, send, or disobey.
