A SHORT HISTORY OF THE AUGUST QUARTERLY

The August Quarterly began in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1814 under the leadership of the Reverend Peter Spencer, founder of the Union Church of Africans—now the Union American Methodist Episcopal Church.

What began as a quarterly religious gathering became a sacred time when free and enslaved Black people traveled from across the region to worship, sing, testify, fellowship, and celebrate their shared faith and heritage. It also became associated with the pursuit of freedom and the work of the Underground Railroad.

More than 200 years later, the August Quarterly remains one of the nation’s oldest continuously celebrated African American religious festivals—a powerful testimony to faith, freedom, family, and perseverance.

We honor the vision of Father Peter Spencer and celebrate the legacy that still brings us together today!
