Good food, great friends, and a saint who knew how to stand his ground — we had it all as we celebrated the feast day of St. Athanasius of Alexandria, our very own “Doctor of the Church”! Big thanks to everyone who came out and made the afternoon so special!!

“The Significance of the Passion of Christ” focused on whether it was necessary that Christ suffer and die in order for humanity to be saved from sin. It was said that Christ did not have to die but that His death was the most fitting way to achieve our salvation. Christ’s death was such a great act of love that it far outweighed all of the sins that could be committed by humanity. His death was the most fitting way to achieve our salvation because It shows us the depth of God’s love for us and gives us an example of perfect humility and obedience.

“The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hail to the King of Israel!””

This past Sunday, we all laughed in agreement with Andy when he said, “I don’t think that God is a bird, but the psalms talk about Him wrapping us in his feathers.” Catholics, Protestants, and Mormons gathered to debate where to draw the line between literal and allegorical in the Bible. While no one took the far literalist or allegorical positions, there was lots of discussion around where to draw the line between the two. Cheers to another topic that continues long after the hour of discussion is done!

On this beautiful day, we discussed The Theological Orientation of Literature, focusing on how human stories intersect with divine narratives and how literature acts as a vehicle for expressing, questioning, or grappling with faith and spirituality. We also considered whether moral maturity comes into play in this exploration. This is what I started

“Clearly, God’s promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based not on his obedience to God’s law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith.”
