Feasts of St. Monica & St. Augustine

Born in the 4th century in North Africa to Christian parents, Monica's patience and kindness helped to bring her husband's family to faith in Christ.
Saint Monica was the mother of Saint Augustine of Hippo. Augustine was extremely intelligent and eventually became one of the greatest saints and theologians in Church history—but his path to faith was far from straightforward.
As a young man, Augustine rejected the Christian faith of his mother and lived for many years in ways that caused Monica deep concern. She continued to pray for him, however, even when it seemed like nothing was changing.
According to tradition, Monica prayed and wept for Augustine for many years, asking God to bring him back to the truth. At one point, she even sought the advice of St. Ambrose, who encouraged her to persevere in prayer.
Eventually, Augustine experienced a profound conversion. He was baptized by St. Ambrose and went on to become a priest, bishop, Doctor of the Church, and saint.

Let’s pray together as parents of our parish today:
Dear St. Monica,
we now ask you to pray with us
for all those sons and daughters
that have wandered away from God,
and to add your prayers to those of all mothers
who are worried over their children.
Pray also for us that,
following your example, we may,
in the company of our children,
one day enjoy the eternal vision of our Father in Heaven.
Amen.

Happy Ordination Anniversary, Deacon Mark Fontana!

Today we give thanks for Deacon Mark — for his kindness, his wonderful sense of humor, his thoughtful and insightful homilies, and the genuine care he shows to our parish family. We are especially grateful for the way he generously gives of himself to our parish while balancing family life and a full-time career.

Deacons play such an important role in the life of our parish. Deacon Mark serves us in so many ways — proclaiming the Gospel, assisting at the altar, celebrating baptisms, serving at graveside services, and being present to our parish families in times of joy and sorrow.

We are truly blessed to have Deacon Mark among us. May God continue to bless him and strengthen him in his vocation of service.

⚽ ST. JOHN THE BELOVED FALL SOCCER REGISTRATION IS OPEN TO SCS PARISHIONERS AND RELIGIOUS ED! ⚽

We are looking for players for the upcoming Fall 2026 SJB Soccer season!

SJB Soccer is CO-ED and open to kids in grades 3–8:

Pre-JV: 3rd & 4th Grade
JV: 5th & 6th Grade
Varsity: 7th & 8th Grade
Registration: $110 per player

With practices anticipated to begin the week of August 24th, we are kindly asking families to register by Friday, August 21st to help us determine our rosters and ensure we have enough players to field each team.

Parish Office Closure Notice – For Repairs
The Pastoral Center and Parish Office is closed through August 30th for maintenance. During that time, Ray Hazel, our Parish Business Manager is available after daily Masses to offer any assistance that may be needed. If you wish to call and leave a message for a staff member during the day, you are welcome to contact Saint John the Beloved (302-999-0211) to have your message relayed to the appropriate person. Emergencies in off-hours will continue to be handled by our Answering Service.
