On Sunday, August 16th, we welcomed member Don Morton as our guest preacher and celebrated as he delivered his first-ever sermon. Well done, son of God. We look forward to supporting you through seminary and your life in ministry.

As is our tradition, First & Central officially kicked off the summer season on Sunday, June 7, by worshiping and picnicking at the “Little Church” on the Brandywine River. This church is an important part of our history. It was the original First Presbyterian Church building (1740-1840), which was located on Market Street, in the area of the current-day Wilmington Library. The building was moved from Market Street to the banks of the Brandywine River in 1916. The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America maintains the building today. We feel fortunate to be able to honor our history by continuing to worship in the church on this special occasion. The picnic food prepared and provided by our congregation never disappoints either! Perfect start to the summer.

It’s always a great day when we volunteer with our friend Mark Puican, founder of 1in7B_Foundation. Saturday, June 6, was no exception. 1 in 7B provides mobile shower and laundry services to our neighbors experiencing homelessness. In addition, 1 in 7B’s mission is to provide hope, help, and love. As always, our volunteer crew brought their A game and made 80+ delicious lunches at the church in the morning. Then we headed out to Christina Park to join Mark in serving lunch and providing shower and laundry services, as well as hygiene products. It was a special treat to have the New Castle Presbyterian Church Youth Group join us to lend a hand along with their parents and leaders. Thank you, Mark, and all of the volunteers for making a difference! If you’d like to learn more about how you can help, simply send us a message.

We gratefully recognized the thousands of hours volunteered by our mission outreach program participants this past winter. From washing out showers and baking breakfast treats in Winter Sanctuary to making and serving warm and nutritious dinners at Code Purples, our volunteers outdid themselves. We also celebrated with joy and sadness the leadership, energy and dedication of Ellen Oiler, fearless champion of the homeless community in Wilmington. Ellen is moving to Pennsylvania and we will miss her mightily.

What a joyful morning at First & Central Presbyterian Church! Our worship was filled with energy and hope as the Wilmington Children's Chorus youth choir lifted our hearts as they sang "Walk Together, Children" alongside our church choir, and "From Little Things, Big Things Grow." We were delighted to welcome the choir and their families and friends to worship. What a gift! The Wilmington Children’s Chorus is a tuition-free community chorus that strives to empower young people to change their world through music and has practiced at First & Central several nights a week for years.

The weather this past Saturday, April 11th, was just perfect for the F&C volunteer crew to lend a hand to our 1in7B_Foundation friends. We made 80 lunches at the church and then headed out to the mobile trailer at Christina Park to serve lunch and help provide shower and laundry services to the guests. F&C has committed to supporting 1 in 7B Foundation one Saturday a month through October. Let us know if you’d like to join us or want to organize your own volunteer and/or lunch crew.
