New Hanover Church

New Hanover Church New Hanover Church is a Bible centered, kid-friendly, fellowship. We are a contemporary community with conservative values. We didn’t invent Christianity.

We desire to live out the gospel message by living life together - supporting and encouraging each other as we grow closer to God. New Hanover Church is a Bible centered – kid friendly - fellowship. We are committed to being relevant to the times in which we live - as well as thoroughly Scriptural. Has there ever been a time when our neighbors needed direction more than now? Pointing those in our

community to a personal faith in Jesus Christ is our highest call. At NHC we desire to live out the Christian life as we find it in the Word of God. We seek simple faith, obedience, love and respect among our members; personal growth, and care for the community in which we live. We enter the community of believers in Wilmington as partners with numerous other excellent churches. Many of the folks in the Wilmington area have moved here from somewhere else. If you are one of those transplants, perhaps we can make your adjustment to our wonderful community just a little easier.

The Statement Always Comes

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” —Galatians 6:7

Sin doesn’t always feel heavy in the moment.

We hide that message from our spouse.

We hold back the truth from our parents.

We lie to our boss to cover our tracks.
Just little things… right?

It’s like swiping a credit card.

We charge and charge, not feeling the weight of it yet.

But then the statement comes. And suddenly, we feel it.

Sin works the same way.

We swipe. We sin. We keep going.

And we push away the One voice trying to stop us.

The Holy Spirit is the one we hear say,
“No, that’s not right.”
“Tell the truth.”
“Bring it into the light.”

But we ignore it. We push His voice aside and do it anyway.

Until the fallout hits, and then we wish we had listened.

The truth is, only the Holy Spirit can help us stop the cycle.

He speaks before the consequences show up.

He doesn’t shame us, He warns us, because He loves us.

And Jesus, He already paid the price for the sin we keep trying to carry.

We don’t break the cycle with more willpower, we break it with surrender.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, don’t let me get comfortable ignoring Your voice. Soften my heart. Help me listen the first time. I don’t want to keep swiping and pretending it won’t catch up with me. Thank You, Jesus, for paying the debt. Help me live in the freedom You gave me, with honesty, conviction, and peace.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“My Refuge, My Fortress, My Peace”

Do you ever find yourself wrestling with fear?

I know I do. More often than I’d like to admit, my heart can feel unsettled and my thoughts can start running ahead of me. In those moments, Psalm 91:2 has become something I hold onto and speak out loud:

“This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.” (NLT)

There’s something powerful in the way God is described here—both as a refuge and a fortress.

A refuge is that immediate place you run to when danger feels close. But a fortress is different. It’s strong, intentional, built for protection that holds steady over time. It’s not just a hiding spot—it’s a secured place of safety.

God is both.

He is the One we run to in the middle of fear, and He is also the One who surrounds us so completely that fear doesn’t get the final word over our lives.

That doesn’t mean hard things won’t come. We live in a world where pain and uncertainty are real. But as God’s children, fear doesn’t get to rule us. It doesn’t get to define us.

We may feel afraid at times—but we don’t have to live afraid.

So when fear starts to rise, we can speak truth instead:
“Lord, You are my refuge and my fortress. You are my God, and I trust You.”

And in that simple declaration, we are reminded—He is not just near us in the storm. He is our safe place within it.

“Only One Thing”

There’s a moment in The Man on the Middle Cross by Alistair Begg that cuts straight through all the noise of religion and performance. He reflects on the thief on the cross—the man who had nothing to offer, no time to make amends, no chance to prove himself—and yet was promised paradise.

That man didn’t bring good works.
He didn’t bring a changed life.
He didn’t bring theological understanding.
He brought only one thing: his need.
“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 23:42)
And Jesus’ response? Immediate, undeserved, complete: “Today you will be with me in paradise.”

It’s unsettling if we’re honest. We like systems. We like earning. We like feeling like we’ve contributed something to our standing with God. But the cross strips all of that away. The man on the middle cross—Jesus—makes salvation entirely about Him.

The thief’s story reminds us that:
We don’t clean ourselves up to come to Christ.
We don’t earn a place at His table.
We don’t negotiate our way into grace.
We simply come.

And that’s both humbling and freeing.
Because if salvation depended on us, we’d always wonder if we’d done enough. But since it depends on Jesus, we can rest in what He has already finished.

The same voice that spoke to the thief speaks to us today—not because we’ve lived perfectly, but because He died perfectly in our place.

So whatever you’re carrying today—regret, failure, questions, exhaustion—you don’t need to fix it first.
Just come.

Reflection Question:
What are you still trying to “bring” to Jesus that He’s already finished for you?

Prayer:
Jesus, I come with empty hands. I let go of trying to earn what You’ve already given. Help me trust fully in what You accomplished on the cross. Thank You that Your grace is enough—even for me. Amen.

Hi Everyone! It’s Kirk McDonald with an NHC Music moment!

I am constantly amazed how such a small church can have this group of talented musicians and singers.

This week we are singing “Endless Praise” by Charity Galye. The lyrics describe how exciting it will be to be in heaven with all of the other believers who have come before us singing praise to our King.

Come sing with us Sunday at 10am! 🎶
