Have you heard the expression "cold as the night the Crissie Wright came ashore"?

Well, today is the anniversary of the sinking of the three-mast schooner. 137 years ago, the captain of the Crissie Wright tried to sail into Cape Lookout Bight after horrendous weather arose. As he navigated into the bight, the main mast broke, leaving the Crissie Wright at the mercy of the waves. The lifesaving crew station at Cape Lookout, and residents of Diamond City tried to launch boats to save the mariners. Residents of Diamond City watched the ship all night, unsure of the status of the crew.

By morning, the whalers from Diamond City finally reached the Crissie Wright and found four men wrapped in the jib sail. Surprisingly, the chef was still alive. The rescuers transported the chef to Beaufort where he received medical treatment. He survived for a year, never fully recovering from that fateful night.

The chilly nights we've been having remind us of the Crissie Wright's story. If you’re heading out in this cold, don’t forget to bundle up! And hey, maybe keep an eye out for a jib sail just in case! Stay warm!
