The History of The New Life Christian Center (C.O.C.H.USA)

In 1967, Elder James Harris was moved by God to start a church. on West 8th Street, Wilmington, Delaware, under the leadership of Bishop David P. McPherson and New York City Superintendent Elder W. Elder James Harris pastored First Church of Christ Holiness U.S.A. at that location for five years, until the Wilmington Housing Authority pur

chased the entire block on which the church resided. With his faith unyielding, Elder Harris did not allow this setback to discourage him. Under the leadership of Bishop Eugene Brown and Eastern Diocese Superintendent Elder Samuel Kendrick, Elder Harris re-established First Church of Christ Holiness U.S.A. in 1974 at 234 North Clayton Street, Wilmington, Delaware. Although there were only a few members, Elder Harris knew that the Lord said, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." Matt. 18:20 (KJV)

Elder James Harris served as Pastor for ten years before retiring from First Church of Christ Holiness U.S.A. in 1984, as well as leaving the Chrysler Corporation after 31 years of dedicated service. The Lord then sent Elder Carey Brown Sr. as successor, who served as Pastor for 14 years. It was in 1998 when Elder Carey Brown Sr. and members decided to change the name of First Church of Christ Holiness U.S.A. to New Life Christian Center (COCH). The "COCH" acronym stands for Church of Christ Holiness. The following February in 1999, Elder Carey Brown Sr. was called to pastor St. Timothy church located in Newport News, Virginia. The bible states "... I will give you (a pastor) according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding." Jer. 3:15 (KJV) So in June 1999, under the leadership of Eastern Diocese Bishop Lindsay Jones and Eastern Diocese Superintendent Elder Samuel Kendrick, Elder Calvin Maurice Brown was nominated to sheppard New Life Christian Center (COCH) where he continues to pastor today. Benevolent. When asked to describe her husband using only one word, Bonita thought for a moment, and then replied, "Benevolent". Pastor Calvin M. Brown is certainly deserving of such an accolade. Born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, Calvin is no stranger in the community. A twenty plus year resident of 3rd and Clayton, Calvin and his family live just steps away from New Life Christian Center where he has pastored since June 1999. With his political campaigns, frequent television appearances, and popular 3rd Street Barbershop, Calvin has become a well-known community personality. He has strived to bring about positive change in the community through leadership by example. Brown has a message of which he is not the author. Come visit the New Life Christian Center and hear the messenger deliver a message that promises salvation for anyone willing to listen. Blessed be the Lord, for we have come this far by faith! General information

National C.O.C.H.USA The Church of Christ (Holiness) U.S.A. shares a common early history with the Church of God in Christ. Charles Price Jones, a Missionary Baptist preacher in Alabama and later Mississippi, accepted the doctrine of Holiness around 1896. During this time C.P. Jones became associated with W. S. Pleasant, J. A. Jeter, Charles Harrison Mason, along with other Holiness leaders. In 1897, C.P. Jones conducted a Holiness convention from June 6-15 at the church he pastured, Mt. Helm Baptist Church, in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1898, the name Mt. Helm Baptist Church was changed to Church of Christ. This new group of Holiness leaders was expelled from the Jackson Baptist Association. From that expulsion, they adopted the name Christ Association of Mississippi of Baptized Believers in Christ in 1900, and the national Holiness movement accepted the name by C. H. MasonChurch of God in Christin 1906. In that same year, an annual convocation selected J. A. Jeter, C. H. Mason, and D. J. Young to investigate the Azusa Street Revival conducted by William J. Seymour. C.H. Mason and D. J. Young accepted William Seymour's teaching concerning the baptism of the Holy Spirit and returned with such doctrinal message with great enthusiasm. After an extended discussion on the issue of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, at the 1907 convention, a right hand of fellowship, a separation occurred, with C. H. Mason, D. J. Young and others leading a Holiness, Pentecostal group. C. P. Jones retained its Holiness emphasis when other early African-American leaders such as C. H. Mason embraced Pentecostalism. The name Church of God in Christ was widely held by both groups until 1915, when Bishop C. H. Mason had the name COGIC, incorporated. Churches of the Holiness division began to use the name Church of Christ Holiness, and in October 1920 was chartered in the state of Mississippi as the Church of Christ (Holiness) U.S.A.. The Church of Christ (Holiness) in the United States is divided into eight dioceses - Eastern, North Central, Northern, Pacific North West, South Central, South Eastern, South Western, and Western. In 2008 the Church of Christ (Holiness) had 15,000 members in 167 congregations in the United States, the Dominican Republic and Africa. The Church of Christ (Holiness) U.S.A. is trinitarian with a Holiness emphasis. Water baptism of believers by immersion and the Lord's supper as a memorial are held to be ordinances of the church. Foot washing is also practiced, but it is not regarded as an ordinance. The church does not reject speaking in tongues (glossolalia). The church emphasizes that the Holy Spirit is an indispensable gift to every believer, but places no emphasis on an initial evidence as speaking in tongues to be the results of such gift.
