Westminster Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, DE

Westminster Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, DE We are a multi-generational community that embraces and welcomes all people and points of view. Other group activities are being planned.

The roots of our church were established in 1857 when Central Presbyterian Church started a mission Sunday School in the outskirts of Wilmington in a section called McDowellville. Expanding, the school moved into a building at Rodney and 14th Streets in 1865 and in 1882, constructed a new building at the corner of Rodney and 13th Streets. This new building was known as the Rodney Street Chapel and

remains the oldest part of the existing structure. On January 28, 1886, the Church came into its own when the Chapel was organized into the Rodney Street Presbyterian Church, with 55 members. To accommodate a growing congregation, the present Gothic style sanctuary was started in 1910, encompassing part of the original building. Upon completion in 1911, the name was changed to Westminster Presbyterian Church. Since that time, other needs have been filled with the addition of a Community Hall, additional church-school space, an updated office wing, and the Memorial Garden. The church is very active in the community with volunteering and other services and activities. A group called Flying Solo was recently established for people that are single, divorced and widowed who are looking to make new friends and participate in group activities. Some of the activities the group has participated in are brunches, game nights, Superbowl party and volunteering.

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn with the congregation and community of Mother African Union Church (The Motherland), whose historic place of worship was destroyed by fire in the early hours of Sunday morning. Founded in 1813, Mother African Union Church has been a beacon of faith, freedom, and resilience in Wilmington, Delaware, for more than 210 years.

As people of faith, we know that a church is more than a building. We know that the loss of this sacred space — a place of hope and belonging where generations gathered, memories were made, and lives were changed — is a profound grief. We stand with the Rev. Dr. Ronald W. Whitaker II, the congregation, and the broader Wilmington community in prayer and solidarity. May they find comfort and strength in the days ahead. 🙏

Delawareans from many walks of life reacted to Sunday's fire that gutted Mother African Union Church in Wilmington.

This Saturday, May 16, is Good Neighbor Day America, a nationwide movement to inspire the good neighbor in everyone through love, kindness, and service. 🤝

As a community of faith, loving our neighbors is something we do together EVERY DAY through Westminster's programs, ministries, and mission partners. And right now, right here in our area, there are people facing hunger, homelessness, and hardship who could really use a helping hand.

Here are a few ways you can make a difference:

🍽️ Serve meals at Emmanuel Dining Room
📦 Donate food to Hanover Food Pantry or Lutheran Community Services
🛋️ Help sort/move furniture through our New Life Furnishings program
📚 Mentor a student at East Side Charter or with Delaware Futures
🏠 Support individuals/families through 1 in 7B Foundation, Family Promise, or Friendship House

What better way to start your week than on a beautiful Sunday morning fueling your spirit at Westminster? ☺️ On SUNDAY, MAY 3, we’ll begin the day by helping neighbors in need with our First Sunday Collection for Hanover Food Pantry from 9:00-9:30 in the church parking lot. 🥫 At 9:30, we'll gather for worship and communion in the sanctuary with returning guest pastor the Rev. Jim Dunkin. 🙏🏼 After worship, stop by the Holy Toast Café for complimentary coffee and then head downstairs for a timely adult education class, "Identifying and Preventing Frauds and Scams." ☕ While that's happening, K-5 kids will learn to play pickleball from some of our experts! 🏓 Perhaps you might like to support our New Life Furnishings ministry in the garages near the parking lot; they'll be open 11 AM-1 PM on Sunday and can always use volunteers and furniture/houseware donations. 🏠 Later, our 180 Youth Ministry will wrap up the program year with its End-of-the-Year Bash from 5-7 PM (offsite). 🎉 We hope to see you!

This SUNDAY, APRIL 26, at Westminster will be a joyful celebration of youth and care for creation! 🌞 More than 20 of our young people will lead us in worship (9:30 AM), joined by our Joyful Noise and Westminster Choirs, as we reflect on 1 Corinthians 12:12–26 and remember that we are all part of one body in Christ. 🙏🏼 After the service, make a quick stop at the Holy Toast Café for coffee ☕, and then stay for our Earth Day Celebration, "Native Wisdom: Faith, Earth, and Care for Creation." 🌎 We'll have a special guest from the Lenape Tribal Census District, interactive displays, simple foods inspired by native wisdom, an activity for kids, and thoughtful reflection on our relationship with the earth through gratitude, reciprocity, and kinship with all creation. Come to support our youth in worship and celebrate God’s good creation!
