We are excited to once again host “Aging Gracefully,” a livestream presentation and conversation around the physical, mental, and social changes that come with growing older. We will gather to watch the presentation, and then share conversation with one another.

On Thursday, November 12 at 1:20pm, we will hear from Kate Bowler, author of Joyful Anyway. Below is her bio:

Kate Bowler, PhD is a four time New York Times bestselling author, award-winning podcast host, and an Associate Professor of American Religious History at Duke University. She studies the cultural stories we tell ourselves about success, suffering, and whether (or not) we’re capable of change. After being unexpectedly diagnosed with Stage IV cancer at age 35, she penned the New York Times bestselling memoir, Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I’ve Loved) and No Cure For Being Human (and Other Truths I Need to Hear). She has also co-written with Jessica Richie, spiritual reflections: Good Enough: 40ish Devotionals for a Life of Imperfection and The Lives We Actually Have: 100 Blessings for Imperfect Days. Her latest book, Joyful Anyway, reveals the surprising magic of joy – and how we can access it even when happiness feels out of reach. Kate hosts the award-winning “Everything Happens” podcast where, in warm, insightful, often funny conversations, she talks with people like Malcolm Gladwell and Beth Moore about what they’ve learned in difficult times. TOMORROW, Sunday, October 18, at 11:15am, Gary Soulsman joins us to present “Are We Eternal? Evidence for Consciousness Beyond Death and the Meaning of Jesus’ Resurrection.”

Many people assume that death marks the end of conscious existence. Yet mystics, near-death experiencers, and a growing number of contemporary researchers point to evidence that consciousness survives the death of the body.

In this two-part class, we will talk about these claims and explore how they resonate with the Christian story of Jesus’ resurrection — a story that proclaims not only that Christ lives, but that our deepest identity is as eternal beings.

Gary Soulsman is a Wilmington writer, teacher and dream group leader with almost 40 years of experience in journalism. For many years, he wrote about religion and spirituality for Delaware’s leading newspaper. In 2026, he served as clerk of the Friends Conference on Religion & Psychology held at the Pendle Hill retreat center.

TODAY, Thursday, October 8 at 1:20pm, we will hear from Ayana Mathis, author of The Unsettled. Below is her bio:

Ayana Mathis is the author of The Twelve Tribes of Hattie and most recently, The Unsettled, the inaugural winner of McSweeney’s Gabe Hudson Prize. The book was named a New York Times and Washington Post Notable Book of 2023, a best of 2023 by The New Yorker, Publisher’s Weekly, an Oprah Daily Best Novels of 2023, and a Kirkus Reviews Best Books of 2023. Her first novel, The Twelve Tribes of Hattie, was a New York Times Bestseller, the second selection for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0, a 2013 New York Times Notable Book, NPR Best Book of 2013, and was long listed for the Dublin Literary Award and nominated for Hurston/Wright Foundation’s Legacy Award. Mathis’ essays and criticism have been published in The New York Times, The Atlantic, T Magazine, The Financial Times, Rolling Stone, Guernica and Glamour. Currently pursuing her Masters of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary, Mathis’ most recent nonfiction explores the intertwining of faith and American literature in her five- part New York Times essay series “Imprinted By Belief.”
