The Windham Philharmonic will present a program of chamber concertos by Bach, Dvorak and Glazunov at St. Mary's in the Mountains in Wilmington. This annual event has attracted full house crowds in previous years with similar programs. Particularly appreciated is the high quality of the orchestra and the commentaries of Maestro Hugh Keelan that precede each piece. The concert is free, with free-will donations going to support the orchestra.
The orchestra's press release provides this useful description of the concert: "Step into a world of color, light, and sound with the Windham Philharmonic’s spring concerts, Music Through a Prism, on Saturday, April 11 and Monday, April 13. This program refracts Baroque, Romantic, and modern music through a vivid kaleidoscope of textures and moods.
Our concert includes Bach’s Concerto for Oboe and Violin in C minor, featuring oboist Aaron Lakota and our concertmaster Michelle Liechti, a dialogue of drive and elevated expression. Maria Gabriela Mendez will enchant us all with the smiling sadness of Dvořák’s Violin Romance.
Combining lush harmonies with a modernist sparkle, Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto of 1934 showcases alto saxophone soloist Nick Pelton. The program closes with Dvořák’s Jarní (Spring), a brief, jubilant celebration of renewal and blossoming energy for orchestra and our guest soloists.
Visual art and music meet in Pedro Pereira’s Cubist-inspired poster, expertly suggesting the playful, multifaceted musical journey awaiting the audience.
Music Through a Prism is a concert of vibrant orchestral sound, inventive programming, played by soloists celebrated and beloved by local audiences."
