Dear Friend,

Have you noticed how the popularity of podcasts has exploded?

In college, we were assigned to study Marshall McLuhan as mass media was multiplying exponentially. He coined the terms "Hot media" and "Cool media", respectively, to illustrate 'high definition' and 'low definition'. My conclusions included the convictions that hot media (such as podcasts, radio, and listening to music) feel like they surround you. Conversely, cool media (which demands some completion from us) can only feel that way when we participate more actively--when listening to a speech/sermon, or when watching a movie, etc.
This coming Sabbath is another 'Missions Sunday' in Gospel CAN; we will listen to (during the Sunday School hours) Liya Liu--our missionary with Ambassadors for Christ--while also commencing Reformation Week (next Sabbath, Oct 25 is Reformation Sunday). Romans 10:14-15a says "How then will they call on Him in Whom they have not yet believed? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent?"

That's true of us and all our missionaries. It's also true of George Whitefield, who not only shared the Gospel 1-on-1 with his longtime friend Benjamin Franklin--but with hundreds of thousands, thru his preaching that led to the Great Awakening and major Reformation (including the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade). So before the two sermons of Oct 18 & Oct 25, we're encouraging you to listen and watch (and perhaps sing!) a song we sang recently at the church in Iceland: "Awaken Us Today!" It's from the soundtrack of "A Great Awakening" (depicting Franklin and Whitefield's friendship).

Dear Friend,

Picture this: You're shivering, homeless, in a cold alley with thin clothing and an empty stomach. As an orphan without even an orphanage, you've been surviving on whatever you can scavenge from dumpsters. You live for temporary pleasures, even if it's half a Hersehy's chocolate bar that rats haven't discovered yet.

But out of nowhere arrives a royal messenger who shows his credentials, looks you straight in the eye, and declares, "The King has adopted you. Look--the documents are already signed in blood..Your name is now in the family-book. You're coming with me to live in the palace with the other princes and princesses who have lived their entire lives there!" The sealed scroll is stamped with the King's own blood-red seal. And inside are promises that can't be broken: "You share my nature and my life. You have already escaped the life of a street urchin. It's no longer rags for you--but imperishable riches from me that go far beyond the material! You now can share in everything that is mine!"

Yet at your first meal (seated at the King's Table, still wondering if this is too good to be true), you take extra food to hide in your pockets...unsure if there will be future meals with him. You even think you'll be back living on the streets soon. This describes me (as a teen) early in my Christian life. Until a mentor pointed out to me that everything needed for "life and godliness" has already been granted--and that thru royal promises I'm now beginning to reflect the King's divine nature. This is the solid ground that I needed. This is also the theme for Sunday from the apostle's Peter second letter (1:5-11).

Dear Friend,

By the time you read this newsletter, Pam and I are in Iceland. It's not a Biblical land such as the other "I" countries (Israel, Iran/Persia, and Iraq/Babylon), but we did locate a church that we plan to worship at this Sabbath--also a Communion Sunday, as Gospel CAN will be experiencing...

Our Director of Youth/Young Adult Ministries, Paul Yu, will introduce you to 2 Peter, which the apostle penned much closer to the end of his earthly pilgrimage. Meeting his Maker/Redeemer face-to-face was very much on his mind. But many in the Early Church were giving up on the Lord's Second Coming, even as Emperor Nero's persecutions were depressing them. Because Peter was an eyewitness of the Incarnate Christ, his 2nd letter to these suffering Christians confirms what they had been taught about Jesus.

False teachers were proposing that, since Christ's 2nd Coming had yet to occur, then His glorious return should no longer be expected at all. These heretics didn't expect ANY future Judgment, so they were now living immoral lives. So Peter addresses the false teaching by emphasizing that he personally saw the majesty and glory of Jesus "on the sacred mountain" --and that all will see this Glory in full when we meet Him face to face...either because He comes again in our generation OR because we die. This 2nd letter won't conclude without mentioning the reason why Christ has delayed His 2nd Coming: to give time for His elect to repent. When it occurs, we'll experience a "new heaven and a new earth". Until then, we "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (3:18).

Communion Sunday's songs, sacrament, Sunday School classes, small groups, and sermon will all contribute to this end! We'll be seeking out the same here in Iceland, in church AND under the Northern Lights (both of which remind us of the Second Coming's "Marriage Supper of the Lamb")!
