Dear Friend,

We come to the end of May--and end of the Apostle Paul's earthly life (2 Tim 4)--this Sabbath. As the apostle sits in a chilly jail-cell on Death Row under pagan Emperor Nero, it becomes obvious again that he's convinced Emmanuel ("God with us") is sovereign over him...not Nero. He's also convinced Emmanuel is his Rescuer (past, present, future--4:17-18).

Question 1: HOW will he say his 'goodbye' (or 'farewells') to dear protege Timothy?

Question 2: how will YOU say goodbye to loved ones when your earthly life in this body is drawing to an end?

I've experienced hundreds of 'deathbed' conversations with my hospice patients when I was a part-time chaplain. Generally, 4 categories have indeed emerged that reflected their worldview and outlook: (1) Genuine assurance of real salvation in Christ--like Paul (2) Genuinely saved--but no real assurance yet--therefore asking me what the Scriptures teach (3) False sense of salvation, believing everyone who dies will go to Heaven--including Christ-haters, like Paul used to be. No need for the Savior. (4) The rare cases of people who are not yet saved and KNOW they're not saved.

Where are you? How will this affect your goodbye? If you're a Gospel-centered realist as Paul is (note his honesty in being both discouraged and encouraged), then God's amazing GRACE will grip you all the way into Paradise!

Dear Friend,

Our expository Scripture this coming Sabbath continues to be Second Timothy. We'll be entering the final chapter on the eve of Memorial Day. Context: the apostle Paul is on death-row and, inspired by the Holy Spirit, writes Tim, you, and me: "In the presence of God, I charge you..." (4:1).

"In the presence of God" also means "Before the face of God"--CORAM DEO in the classic Latin phrase. Every second of every day God is watching over us. Do you believe that? If so, then He will empower you to keep looking unto Him even when you're suffering, even in an era "when people will not endure sound teaching--but, having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers (influencers) to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths" (4:3-4).

Throughout history, when widespread revival and reformation is sent by God during such difficult days (3:1), widespread human surveillance was needed much less; crime-rates would actually plummet as people turn to Christ, in Whose face we see the "light of God's glory" [2 Cor 4:6].
