Dear Friend,

As I write, we're on the eve of our fourth day without electricity following the early-week lightning strikes. Have Pam & I delighted in the darkness? Has it been easy to go about our modern responsibilities without air-conditioning, refrigeration, and fully-charged devices? No and no. But it's a far cry from the suffering experienced by grieving families in Nepal this past week due to much worse natural disasters which our missionary (John Chiang) will report eight days hence...in-person! (9/12 lunch). God has used our temporary darkness to remind me of Keith Green's song "Asleep in the Light". Too often--when I've had all the modern conveniences--I sleep "in the light" without actively caring for those in need around me!

This coming Sabbath (Communion Sunday) we'll be in the fourth chapter of Peter's First Epistle. Through God's glorious Gospel, the apostle is being transformed from a coward who had always put his own well-being first, to a servant-leader armed with the same attitude of Christ who tells His followers: "Serve one another as good stewards of God's manifold grace" (1 Peter 4:10).

Christ demonstrated this kind of service in the Upper Room before going to the Cross...How? By washing His disciples' feet--while on His knees. When He came to Peter, do you remember Pete's reaction? "You shall never wash my feet"! (John 13:8). But then the Lord, on His knees (interceding that Satan would NOT sift Peter "like wheat"), replied to him: "If I don't wash you, you have no share with Me".

As we come to His Table this Sunday, will we let the Lord minister TO us, so that He can then minister THROUGH us? Or are you delighting in darkness? Worse yet, are you "asleep in the light"? May we let His Holy Spirit awaken us so that we can "serve one another as good stewards of God's manifold grace"!

PS--Just as I was finishing this (by candlelight!), our electricity came back on. Praise God for His mercy. Pray now that I don't take the Light of the world for granted!

Prayerfully in Christ, the Living Word!

Jesus and the J-Curve

Worship on the Sabbath is approaching, and so is our looking again unto Jesus. His apostles Paul (Phil 2:6-11) and Peter (1 Peter 3:18-22) agree: Because of Christ's "J-Curve" [see below diagram from Paul Miller of 'seeJesus' Ministries] illustrating His life, death, resurrection, and ascension, we redeemed sinners can really look forward--not only to autumn, but to Eternity!

If you're local, you have Saturday opportunity--10 AM at our Gospel CAN facility--to witness this "J-Curve" reality in our memorial service for 46YO Chunyan 'Winnie' Wang, who went to Heaven earlier this month 4 days after being converted to Christ and 3 days after being baptized.

This "J-Curve" reality will continue on Sunday as Gospel CAN missionary to multiethnic Philadelphia--Rev. Maranatha Chung (Northeast Community PCA Church)--will actually at pur 11 AM service exposit 1 Peter 3:18-22 while holding forth the Word of Life in our broken world... "For Christ suffered for our sins, the Righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh...(But now after) the resurrection of Jesus Christ, He has ascended into Heaven and is at the right hand of God--with angels, authorities, and powers subject to Him"
Join me for more 'fellowship of His Gospel'--in the Fellowship Hall--following either the Saturday memorial service or the Sunday worship service. And please keep Winnie's family in your prayers well after this weekend... as God so leads, okay?

The same Peter who writes ‘Seek peace & pursue it’, quoting Ps. 34, earlier asked Jesus ‘How often should I forgive—7 times?’ Remember the Redeemer’s answer? ‘7 x 70’…!

Friday evening: Wen & Tony led us in bilingual musical worship. Saturday morning: Our bi-weekly men’s fellowship sharpened each other spiritually via 1 Samuel 18. And on Sunday: our all-men’s praise team introduced us to this new song…before Pastor Doug preached on more of 1 Peter 3!

Dear Friend,

Have you ever heard of Corrie ten Boom? Whether you have or not, you should know who Corrie Pennell is: one of the Gospel CAN missionaries to Taiwan--where some of our church members visited her recently! Corrie's parents (downstate Delaware) named her after Corrie ten Boom when she was born here...because THAT Corrie's life was totally gripped by Christ and His Gospel.

"The Hiding Place" (book and movie) dramatically recounts the Dutch ten Boom family's story. For protecting Jews headed into the N**i Holocaust, Corrie's dad and sister Betsie both died in separate concentration camps. Since Corrie, in God's providence, was released via clerical error, she spent 3+ decades traveling the world to give her family's Christian testimony. Famously, post-WW2, she encountered one of the cruel SS guards who helped cause Betsie's death. He now professed faith in Christ, so extended his hand and asked Corrie to forgive him. She froze--unable to offer her own hand--until she silently prayed, "Jesus, I cannot forgive him. Give me YOUR forgiveness".

Then she took his hand, and experienced a Spirit-empowered love that "wasn't my own". She went on to bless him in his newfound Christian faith--leading to an exhilarating peace for him and for her! Yesterday, Corrie ten Boom was living out the Gospel in Europe. Today, Corrie Pennell is living out the Gospel in Asia. In North America now, are you being gripped by the Gospel of Christ? We believe the Gospel CAN transform our hearts; the Gospel CAN heal our relationships; and the Gospel CAN enrich our world.
Reply here if you want to inquire about the Gospel in your life right now and/or if you want Corrie Pennell's prayer-letter updates.

Meanwhile, I'll see you this Sabbath on the livestream, or on-site, as I hold forth the Word of life from 1 Peter 3 which the ministry of BOTH Corrie's exemplify: Blessing, instead of cursing, our enemies (verses 9 thru 17) is possible...only because Christ first blessed us while we were still His enemies!
