Congregation Sukkat Shalom

Sukkat Shalom means a “sukkah of peace.” A sukkah is open with no roof or permanent walls.

Sukkat Shalom, the Open Congregation, uses the image of a sukkah to remind us that our spiritual life is open to others and to God – flexible and dynamic. We offer a full program of innovative family education, meaningful and creative worship, adult discussion and study, interfaith couple support groups, and holiday observances. Sukkat Shalom is a progressive synagogue in which to explore Jewish thought and search for personal meaning.

🌈 Pride Shabbat Update! 🌈
Friday, July 17

Out of an abundance of caution, the Pride Family Picnic and Shabbat Service has been moved indoors.

We will gather in the Sanctuary with Rabbi Tick Brill and Kenny Lyonswright for our annual Pride Shabbat. We welcome guest speaker Cody Chen, General Manager of the Joffrey Ballet, along with cantorial soloist Jennifer Grayson, who will share music with Kenny Lyonswright throughout the service.

We look forward to celebrating community, pride, and Shabbat together—and don't forget to stay for the oneg! 💜✨

Our last day started and ended at the Danube River. This morning we toured several memorials, including the shoes on the Danube, remembering those who were shot on the banks of the river. Our wonderful guide Agi challenged us to think about honest and dishonest memorials.

Then, we had a lecture with Gabor Gyori, learning about the current political and economic climate in Hungary.

After lunch, we visited the JCC, home of secular Jewish life in Budapest. We sang and danced with new friends!

We concluded our day with a festive dinner and a sunset cruise on the Danube.

What an amazing week it’s been! Learning, reflecting, eating, building community, and having fun. Where will Sukkat Shalom go next? Find out this fall!

Another incredible day in Budapest! We began our day at Szim Shalom, one of two Reform congregations in Hungary, where we met with a board member to learn about the community and progressive Jewish life here. Then, we went back in time, visiting the Jewish quarter and Dohany synagogue, learning the Hungarian story from the Holocaust - very different from many other countries in Europe. We talked about Raoul Wallenberg and other righteous gentiles who saved thousands of Jewish lives.

This afternoon, we visited a winery in the Etyek wine region for a tasting. We wrapped up our day with dinner at a modern Hungarian restaurant recommended by our guide followed by ice cream at a local cafe owned by a family from Highland Park!

Shavua tov from Budapest! We arrived yesterday just before Shabbat, which we spent at Frankel Synagogue, an example of Hungary’s unique Neolog Judaism. Before services we met with Jewish educator Linda Vero Ban who brought BBYO to Hungary, and her husband Rabbi Tomas Vero. Linda is also a Jewish children’s book author and I’m bringing home a copy of each of her books for Family School. After services, we enjoyed a festive Shabbat dinner at Mazel Tov, an Israeli restaurant.

Today, we started our day at the top of Buda - Castle Hill, where we learned about the history and architecture of the city from our guide Agi. Then, we engaged in a cooking class and made our own lunch - cold cherry soup, chicken paprikash with nokedli, and apple strudel. We wrapped up the day’s touring with a visit to the Hungarian State Opera House.

Another powerful day in Czechia! Today we went to Terezin, touring the various museums, the secret synagogue, and the crematorium. We learned about the spiritual resistance the Jews engaged in by creating poetry, art, music, and theater. We finished our time at Terezin with a brief memorial service, saying Kaddish for all those who died at Terezin and those who passed through on their way to Auschwitz. After a meaningful day, we returned to Prague for a relaxing afternoon on the Vltava River to soak up a bit more of the city before we head to Budapest tomorrow!

We’ve had an incredible start to our journey through Prague and Budapest! Yesterday, we took a historic tram up to the Prague castle complex where we learned a lot about the history of Prague and visited the St. Vitus Cathedral. We spent today in the Jewish quarter, visiting four different synagogues dating back hundreds of years, and the Jewish cemetery. Today, some of the synagogues are still functional and some house museums and memorials. And the golem lives in the attic of one of them!
