Vermont's Extreme Cold Weather Shelter Program and Municipal Support Grant applications are open for winter 2026-27.

Here's the thing. This money only helps neighbors if our communities don't apply for it.

So ask. Ask your selectboard. Ask your town manager. Ask your congregation. Ask the nonprofits you support. Are we signing up? If not, why not?

Cold weather shelter does not happen because we announce a program. It happens because neighbors in a town decide their unhoused neighbors are worth the paperwork and the connections.

And we cannot keep outsourcing decisions and care for our most vulnerable neighbors to a system that is not working. Look around. Boy howdy, there are a lot of empty bedrooms in this state. Surely we can organize better than this. Surely we can move in closer and love our neighbors in need.

Applications are due October 1. There is an information session on Tuesday, September 15, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Guidance, standards, FAQs, and both applications are at GetWarmNowVT.org.

Questions? Email [email protected]. We will walk you through eligibility, the forms, and the budget.

Nobody freezes because Vermont ran out of money. They freeze because of a lack of connection.

Millions of Americans struggle in sometimes unimaginable ways, and Trump’s cuts in food stamps and other benefits are now making life even more precarious.

Police were already inside. More were outside. Before it was over I counted at least eleven officers from two agencies an...

Green Mountain Justice is hiring an Operations Coordinator. Part-time. Up to $35/hr. A mix of remote and in-person relational work across Vermont. In addition to playing a key role in coordinating the expansion of the Neighbor Care ecosystem, you'll help operate Vermont’s Extreme Cold Weather Shelter Program and Municipal Support Grant Program.
We call folks in need our neighbors, not our clients. And we work with, not for them. Because we care, connect, and collaborate for justice, not for just us.
