We have disappointing news to share regarding the old tree that has provided shade and an outdoor gathering spot at the back of our historic structure. After being stressed and dying, it was finally cut down, with much of it removed, and the remaining portions are available to anyone wanting to come pick them up. Ann Meador, with The History Taskforce, took the time to count the rings in the tree stump, to determine how long the tree had been there and whether it was present when the current structure, built in 1899, was erected. It appears that the tree is 128 years old, and the church structure is 126 years old. One can conclude the tree was in the brush arbor after the original structure was built in 1867 and before the current structure was built in 1899.
It was with much sadness that we were forced to say goodbye to a faithful servant of the church, who provided years of shade and shelter from the harsh sun beaming on our unofficial designated church picnic area.
And now there are several pieces of oak wood rings at the back of the structure, free for anyone wanting firewood for their fireplaces or school bonfires, if the schools still conduct such activities.
Thank you old friend!
