When Hurricane Helene hit, causing mass destruction for our neighbors, we felt helpless.
We wanted to lend a helping hand.
Presbyterian Disaster Relief suggested that local churches provide disaster relief buckets filled with cleaning supplies for immediate distribution to those affected by the storm.
While our church is small in numbers, we are big at heart.
With only 35 people in attendance last Sunday, enough money was donated to fill 50 buckets.
We set a goal to have the buckets completed and delivered to the main office in Wytheville by week's end.
Gathering enough supplies turned out to be a challenge. Every store had a shortage of the items we needed!
After a number of trips to various stores, we met many wonderful people who were gracious and encouraging. Many offered thanks for what we were attempting. Some of the people we met had been on site, feet on the ground, assisting those who had lost their homes. They spoke with tears in their eyes of the destruction.
When the individual components for the buckets were finally gathered, a crew of three unloaded the supplies and organized them on Wednesday afternoon in the church basement.
Thursday afternoon, a group of nine met to assemble the buckets and slip a hand-written note of encouragement into each one.
Friday morning, the buckets will be delivered to Wytheville for distribution to areas in need.
The whole project was completed in record time and we came in under budget!
This will allow us to possibly put together additional buckets in the future, or reach out in other ways to help our neighbors.
Thank you to Lowes in Galax for donating buckets and lids.
Thanks to Tractor Supply in Mt. Airy for the discount on items purchased there.
Thanks to the generous folks at Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian for the donations that made it all possible.
Finally, thank you to all who helped organize and fill the buckets.
Our prayers continue to be with all those who have suffered so much in the aftermath of Helene.
