Hey everyone! This is Pastor Dey.
Someone is impersonating me and sending emails asking for codes for Apple gift cards for our church. They're sending emails from leadpastorlutheranchurch1 @ gmail.com. That is not my email address! My email address can be found on our church website or in our weekly bulletin.
I will NEVER ask our members to discreetly share gift card codes with me for our members online.
A rule of thumb: whenever someone contacts you online asking for gift card codes in particular, or ask you to be discreet or secretive about it, ALWAYS refuse them because that's what most online scammers do to take advantage of people.
And always be wary when someone posing to be your pastor asks for money online. Because of pastors' large social circles and because we work for charitable organizations, we're often targeted when it comes to online scams like these.
If you've already given this person the codes, there's nothing more that can be done, I'm afraid, other than filing a report with the Internet Crimes Complaint Center. (ic3.gov)
