pre 1870. Before Mt. Olive was built, the folks from north of the River used to ford or cross White River by boat to go to Port Williams ...church erected there in 1850. (History wri

1870 2-8. Bartimus and Emily Williams deeded Mt. Olive Church property to trustees (Arthur Hinshaw, Arthur Hastings, Lewis Williams, Sr., Bartimus Williams and successors as trustees) to hold for purposes of a church.
1870 Sep. Jacob Bossert employed by trustees to build the church building. It took four months.
1871. Several families from Port William went to Mt. Olive. We had no public roads, just gateways. The old road at the county line was a gate west of Mt. In 1878 we had the road opened from Port Williams north across the river to intersect with the Bedford Road near RR rock quarry. We had a ferry on this road and after the Mt. Olive Church was established several went there to church in spite of the handicap in crossing the river in a boat. When the river was too high we crossed in small boats. When too low, we would ford. 1871 January. Elder James Mathers preached the dedication sermon, at which time, Mount Olive church was organized with about 60 members, most of whom were former members of Old Union and Port Williams Churches.

There was an article about my parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Grissom moved on Harry Hammersley’s place last week. (I think this is the house that was torn down that used to be next to where Stella Hammersley lived on Hammersley Lane near the Williams Community Building.) Sandy (Grissom) Hudson

Does anyone know what is going on with the old Williams high school gymnasium? Thanks, Sandra Hudson.
*******************
I’m looking for some local help. I’m a Hoosier teacher working on a project documenting Indiana high school gyms past and present.

Can anyone tell me if the old Williams high school gym is still intact, or if it was turned into apartments when the rest of the building was?

Also, would anyone know who to contact about checking out the old Heltonville gym? I can’t seem to find anything online.

Thanks for your help!

Bruce Alan Sparks Obituary
Bruce Alan Sparks, 63, of Bedford, Indiana, passed away on February 12, 2026, at Indiana University Hospital Bedford. He was born on June 15, 1962, to the late Sherman and Elaine Sparks. On April 24, 2002, he married Stacey Robbins, and she survives.

He was a member of Westside Trinity Pentecostal Church and a member of Local Union 440-2, where he served as chairman for some time. Bruce attended Edgewood High School and was part of the Class of 1980. He was also a very proud member of the United States Air Force Reserves for six years.

Bruce was a true outdoorsman who found peace and joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved sitting on his front porch, quietly watching the wildlife and taking in the beauty around him. Hunting, fishing, and camping were among his favorite pastimes, and he treasured the time spent outdoors. Bruce loved his family fiercely and completely. He was a kind and gentle soul who never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Raised by two ministers, he carried with him a deep sense of compassion, faith, and kindness that shaped the way he lived his life. He had a talent for restoring old homes and took great pride in bringing new life to forgotten places, including the old church he and Stacey lovingly restored together. Above all else, Bruce cherished his family, and nothing brought him greater happiness than being “Grumps” to his beloved grandchildren.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Stacey Sparks; daughters, Heather (Robert) Emminger and Amber Harding; grandsons, Jace Sparks, Raylan Emminger, and Vincent Stridel; brothers, David (Ann) Sparks and Sherman Ray Sparks; brothers-in-law, Kenneth (Lisa Bray) Robbins Jr. and Matthew (Neil Dyer) Robbins; nephews, Josh Allen, Kenneth Robbins, Isaac Robbins, and Devin Sparks; and nieces, Stephanie Ruelas, Tiphani Simpson, and Courtney Short as well as countless other friends and family.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Sherman and Elaine Sparks; brother Cecil Sparks; and niece Amber Smrz.

Memorial Services for Bruce will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne Family Funeral Homes in Bedford, with Pastor Steven Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Cemetery in Williams, Indiana. Visitation will also be held on February 20, 2026, from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 2:00 PM at Ferguson-Lee Chapel.

Memories may be shared, condolences sent, and flowers ordered at www.ThorneFunerals.com.
