We thought you should know:

"Congratulations to Canon Mark Laubach (Minister of Music Organist, Choir Director) of St.Stephen's Episcopal Church WilkesBarre Pa. USA, who will be receiving an honorary recognition from the Royal School of Church Music UK this Saturday at St. Alban's Cathedral in England for his many years of hosting the King's Summer Course RSCMA."

We are so grateful to Mark and the hospitality of St. Stephen's the many years the course took place in Wilkes-Barre! Well deserved!

Celebration Day is an annual opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for the work of the RSCM and to present their Honorary Awards.

I come to you with news that I did not hope to share. Unfortunately, we have decided to cancel the RSCMA King's College Summer Residency for this summer of 2024.

Like so many other choral programs, the King's Course was adversely affected by the COVID pandemic and was forced to cancel the courses for 2020, 2021, 2022, and now, 2023. After three (almost four) years of being deprived of this wonderful opportunity for singers aged 10 through adults (even into their 80s), we were so eager and hopeful that we could revive the course this July. Unfortunately, due to low registration numbers, we cannot, in good faith, run the course this summer.

The long layoff has been tough on all RSCM summer residencies, and many of them have been canceled for lack of registration. We see this in our parish choirs as well who, once, used to be full, but now are working to rebuild. After 20+ years of the King’s College Course, it’s over. We’ve had a good run and made lots of good memories, and for that, we should be truly grateful.

Tom Sheehan and I have agreed to step down as co-managers of the course and will no longer be offering the course at this location. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support and love of our course over these past years.

If you registered for the course and paid via PayPal, reimbursements will be processed and in your bank accounts by the end of the month. If you paid via check, those checks will be cancelled. Please reach out to Addie Peyronnin with any questions about payments.

And with that, I leave you with this:

"I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."

Much love,
Daley Whitaker

From the King’s College RSCMA Choral Residency,
Important News—and an urgent request:

Every summer since 1995, choristers of all ages from around the United States have gathered in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to sing together, worship together, and forge lifelong friendships—until 2020, when the COVID pandemic interrupted and damaged so many activities and lives. The King’s College choir week was no exception, and for three years now there has been no King’s Course. Plans are now in place this summer to renew the King’s College Choral Residency in Wilkes-Barre this summer from July 24 to 30.

But we can’t revive the Course alone. Fifty registrations is the absolute minimum we need, and we are currently well short of that number. If you’re planning on coming (or sending choristers) please contact us as soon as possible, no later than April 15. That’s when we will determine whether there will be a King’s College Choir Course this summer—or not. We’re counting on your response!

Now it is time to feature the famous organ at St. Stephen!

The instrument at St. Stephen’s incorporates the work of Austin (1905), Aeolian-Skinner (1954), and later, Allan Van Zoeren. Berghaus rebuilt the organ so that the “new” instrument successfully assimilated the disparate tonal qualities of the previous builders. The result is a highly successful instrument that enhances the Anglican liturgical tradition and is often showcased in programs by Canon Mark Laubach. St. Stephen's be celebrating the 20th anniversary of Berghaus organ dedication in March of 2023.
