The Fifth Sunday in Lent
Passion Sunday
Intent: Humility
The Collect
O LORD, who didst lay aside thy glory and take upon thee the earthly robe of mortal flesh, we pray for wisdom to avoid the specious snare of pride and ever to walk humbly and heedfully in thy sight; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost throughout all ages of ages. R. Amen,
The Epistle
The epistle is taken from the twelfth chapter of the Epistle of St Paul the Apostle to the Romans, beginning at the second verse.
BE not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. For I say to every man that is among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body and all members have not the same office, so we, being many, are one body in Christ and every one members one of another.
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; or ministry, let us wait on our ministering; or he that teacheth, on teaching; or he that exhorteth, on exhortation. He that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that showeth mercy, with cheerfulness. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, for it is written: Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink; in so doing, thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

The Gospel
The holy gospel is taken from the eighteenth chapter of the Gospel according to St Luke, beginning at the ninth verse.
HE spake this parable unto certain who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying: God be merciful to me, a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. And they brought unto him also infants, that he should touch them; but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called them unto him and said: Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God. Amen, I say unto you: Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.
