Our Next Service
Annual Water Communion
September 6, 2026 at 11:00 am

First UU’s Annual Water Communion returns September 6 — and featured speakers are YOU! Plan now to bring and share water that represents something meaningful from the past year to share with the congregation — your backyard, a favorite park, the sink where you bathed your infant child, water from your travels (its provenance can be metaphorical), joys and concerns about our living planet. It’s a great way to express how being part of our community enriches each and all of our lives. Linda Jordan will MC. If you forget your water, a pitcher will be available. Ismail Farid will perform special vocal music.

While the church is now open for all services and activities regardless of your vaccina-tion status, the Board strongly recommends that all of us be vaccinated and asks that we continue to practice social distancing when possible, especially when around members and friends who are still opting to wear masks. Online Zoom access is pro-vided for those who cannot attend services or events in person.

ACLU of Kansas launches “Opportunity Forward”, new campaign for immigrants’ rights in the Free State

The ACLU of Kansas is launching “Opportunity Forward,” a new campaign focused on protecting immigrants’ rights in the state that will prioritize rolling back or preventing 287(g) agreements on the local level, protecting in-state tuition for students, and pushing back against the use of ICE detainers to hold people in local county jails.

“Spaciousness of Belief”
August 30, 2026 at 11:00 am

Bruce Young will present “Spaciousness of Belief” by Rev. Matt Alspaugh, who notes that while some people settle into a spot in “the spir-itual domain,” others “are always on the move, exploring. In times of trouble, when spiritual thunderstorms brew, we might backtrack to the last secure spot. But always, we’re curious, we yearn to move on. Both approaches have value.” Gary Gimple will play special harmonica music.

Online Zoom access is provided for those who can-not attend services or events in person. Details on our website.

“Sacred U-Turns”
Our Next Service August 23, 2026 at 11:00 am

Joe Mohr will present “Sacred U-Turns,” noting that “Among the most misunderstood religious ideas is the practice of repentance. Too often tied to guilt and punishment, the word’s original meaning is far more hopeful: to change one’s mind. Growth requires the courage to admit when we are wrong and the humility to keep learning. But transformation might begin with a simple but powerful phrase: “I was mistaken.’” Seth Girton will bring us special cello music.

“Original Blessing, Original Responsibility”
Our Next Service, August 16, 2026 11:00 AM

Joe Mohr will present “Original Blessing, Original Responsibility,” addressing ‘original sin,’ which “has left many people carrying burdens of shame and unworthiness. Yet declaring that human beings are naturally good does not fully account for the realities of history. We’ll explore a middle path: we are born with inherent worth and dignity, but also with the capacity for compassion and cruelty. What if being human means embracing both blessing and responsibility?” Ish Farid will bring us Special Music.

“All The Tiny Muscles”
Our next service – August 9, 2026

Kay Davis presents “All the Tiny Muscles” by Rev. Tess Baumberger, noting “When my son was in his infancy, I remember watching him learn to sit up, wobbling precariously. They require coordinating all the tiny muscles hugging around your torso, working in unison. Those we love are tiny muscles supporting our lives. We often aren’t conscious of how much they support us until they become sick, or die, or leave our lives in other ways.” The First UU Choir performs “Blue Boat Home,” by Peter Mayer
