A good Michaelmas to you! Immanuel family is invited to join our brothers and sisters at Trinity Lutheran Church to celebrate this festival tonight at 5:30 pm.

5:30 p.m. Divine Service for the Festival of St. Michael & All Angels

September brings the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, commemorating the archangel Michael and the heavenly host. Scripture teaches that Michael leads the fight against Satan, casting him down from heaven (Revelation 12). September 29 reminds us of the comfort that God’s angels bring, guard­ing and bearing us up (Psalm 91).

Besides engaging in prayer and asking God to continue to protect us from all evil, this day also invites celebration. Over the centuries, Christians have noticed that this feast coincides with blackberry season (in much of the Northern Hemisphere), which may explain the old legend that when Satan fell from heaven, he was cast down into a thorny blackberry bush. Consider leaning into this whimsical tradition that encourages us to notice how the natural world reflects the church’s calendar. Serving blackberry foods for Michaelmas is a joyful way to mark the day and celebrate Christ’s eternal victory over Satan, won for us on the cross.

Today is Day 2 of our Continuing Education class, Fathers and Heretics: The Apostolic Fathers with Dr. James Bushur of Concordia Theological Seminary Fort Wayne. We have almost 20 registrants and several others popping in to take in a session or two.

Our annual rummage sale is only a month away! Help special projects at Immanuel by donating items for the sale. Those donations may be placed on the Fellowship Hall stage.

Starting July 13th during church office hours, we will be sorting and pricing in the Fellowship Hall. All are invited to spend a few hours pitching in. Thank you!

Every year Lutherans for Life Council of Federation Presidents sponsors a national essay contest. LFL of Kansas hosted the state level contest, and this year two of Immanuel’s young people were recognized for their essays. Elsie Bergman won second place for her essay in the 6th-8th grade category, and Sarah Lovett was the recipient of the Inaugural Jeanne Mackay Award, which is intended to honor and encourage individuals or organizations in Kansas who have demonstrated long-term, consistent, and high-quality efforts to defend life as God proclaims it. This year’s theme was “That They May Have Life, and students were tasked to write a life-affirming essay using John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” You can read both of their essays in the Lutherans for Life of Kansas May and June Newsletters (or on our bulletin board at church!)
