My Prayer...

Father, please help me rein in my envious and covetous heart. I know that my desire for things makes me anxious and near-sighted in my faith. Please give me a more expansive view of your Kingdom and a greater trust that your past demonstrations of grace will be equally true in the future. As you do, I am committed to use the blessings you lavish on me to help others.

In the name of the Lord Jesus. Amen.

Morning Prayer

Mighty Lord, there are marvelous things that I do not know, nor can I comprehend: things that happen in my life, and things that happen in my friends’ lives, and things that happen in the world. I pray to be thankful when I hear of all of them, to appreciate everything that comes across my path. So often life hurts, and I get angry or upset; I do not understand, yet you ask me to be thankful for everything, and have faith.

So I thank you now, Lord, for all those occasions when I have forgotten or have been so caught up in emotions that I could not. Help me to be thankful, I pray, when the rains come on the just and the unjust, that you care so much about me, that the rains come to chasten, to build character and godliness in me. And help me to live as a mirror of your Son, so that I might reach others. Amen.

Promise #254:
Reach out and you will touch Me for I am not far from you.

The Apostle Paul was speaking to many Greek philosophers on Mars Hill in Athens when he made this statement. This Bible verse is part of a discourse in which Paul addresses a statue of an 'unknown god' and tells all the listeners who God is. I like this verse and the following verse in Paul's proclamation of the gospel in the NIV Bible.

Acts 17:27-28
27 God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. 28 'For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.' (NIV)

Paul tells these dear pagan folks that God is so close to them that they can actually reach out and touch Him, for 'in Him we live and move and have our being.’ The truth is that the universe does not contain God; God contains the universe! In Colossians 1, the Bible says that Jesus is the glue that holds everything together: every proton, every electron, every atom... all held together by the very presence of Jesus.

As you ponder this promise today, may God give you the awareness of His nearness to you. He is not far off in some distant land but is closer than you could imagine! So reach out today and encounter the love of your Father that is with you wherever you go.
