There is a moment many of us know.

Someone shares something heavy. A family burden. A difficult diagnosis. A worry they have been carrying quietly.

We care. We want to respond with faith. We want to believe God can meet them right there.

But often, uncertainty rises too.

What do I say?
Should I offer to pray?
What if it feels awkward?

So we stay safe. We say something kind. We promise to pray later.

And sometimes that is good.

But sometimes the Holy Spirit may be inviting us to more — not to be impressive, not to force a moment, but to become more available.

The same Holy Spirit who moved in Scripture is still near. Still active. Still moving.

He meets us in ordinary places: kitchens, parish halls, hospital rooms, car rides, quiet prayers, and trembling obedience.

Sometimes walking in His power looks like peace instead of panic. Prayer instead of avoidance. Courage instead of silence. Trust instead of fear.

That is part of the beauty of Encounter formation: learning not only to believe the Holy Spirit is real, but to recognize His presence and respond to Him in everyday life.

Encounter School of Ministry Wichita begins September 14th. You are invited to Come and See- attend the first 3 classes as our guest and experience what Encounter formation has to offer.

She told me what she was carrying, and I could feel my heart ache for her.

I wanted to help. I wanted to say something that would bring peace. I wanted to pray with faith and believe God could meet her right there in the middle of it.

But in that moment, I mostly felt unsure.

What do I say? What if I pray wrong? What if nothing happens? What if I make it awkward?

So I said something kind.

I told her I would pray for her.

And I meant it.

But later, I wondered if the Lord had been inviting me to more.

Not to be impressive. Not to force anything. Not to pretend I had answers I did not have. But to be available.

So many of us care deeply about people. We see the pain in our families, hear the discouragement in our friends, and notice the burdens people carry into church and back out again.

And we want to help.

But wanting to help and feeling equipped to help are not the same thing.

We want to pray with others, but we hesitate.

We want to hear God’s voice, but we second-guess ourselves.

We want to bring encouragement, healing, and hope, but we often assume someone else is more qualified.

So we stay safe.

We offer sympathy when maybe God is inviting us to offer prayer.

We stay quiet when maybe the Holy Spirit is prompting us to speak a word of encouragement.

But what if God is not waiting for us to become impressive?

What if He is simply inviting us to become formed?

Encounter School of Ministry exists for that space — the space between compassion and confidence.

It is a place where ordinary Catholics can learn to hear God’s voice, pray with greater confidence, and minister to others with humility, wisdom, and love.

Maybe you have felt this too.

Maybe you have wanted to pray with someone but held back.

Maybe you have sensed that God wants to use you, but you do not know where to begin.

Maybe that desire to serve is not random.

Maybe it is an invitation.

Encounter School of Ministry — Wichita is a place to begin learning how to say yes.

There comes a point in the spiritual life when you realize you are grateful for your faith…

…but still hungry.

You go to Mass.
You pray.
You believe.
You may even serve.

And yet somewhere deep inside, there is a quiet ache:

“Lord, is there more?”

Not more busyness.
Not more obligations.

But more of Him.

More confidence in prayer.
More awareness of His voice.
More courage to step out when someone needs encouragement.
More freedom to live with the Holy Spirit, not just talk about Him.

Many ordinary Catholics feel stuck somewhere between belief and action.

We want to pray with others, but we are afraid we won’t know what to say.

We want to hear God’s voice, but we are not sure we can recognize it.

We want to help people who are hurting, but we feel unequipped.

We want to live as disciples, but sometimes we do not know what the next step actually looks like.

So we wait.

Until we feel more ready.
More holy.
More knowledgeable.
More confident.
More qualified.

But what if formation is the place where God begins to build that confidence?

What if hunger is not a sign that something is wrong with your faith…

…but a sign that the Holy Spirit is inviting you deeper?

That is the heart behind Encounter School of Ministry.

Encounter is not just about learning more information. It is about being formed to live more fully as a disciple of Jesus — learning to hear God’s voice, pray with greater confidence, minister to others with humility, and grow in the gifts of the Holy Spirit within the heart of the Church.

It is for ordinary people who are hungry for more of God.

People who love the Church.
People who want to serve.
People who want their prayer life to become more alive.
People who want to stop watching from a distance and begin saying yes more fully.

It is not too late to join us for the 2026-2027 school year. https://encounterschool.org/wichita/

There is a kind of restlessness that does not mean someone is losing faith.

Sometimes it means faith is waking up.

It can happen to someone who goes to Mass faithfully.

Someone who loves the Church.

Someone who prays, serves, gives, believes, and keeps showing up.

From the outside, nothing may look wrong.

But inside, there is a question that keeps returning:

“Is there more?”

Not more activity.
Not more responsibility.
Not more noise.

More of God.

More depth in prayer.
More confidence in hearing His voice.
More awareness of the Holy Spirit.
More courage to live the Gospel beyond familiar routines.

For some people, that hunger can feel confusing.

They wonder if they should just be more content.
They wonder if wanting more means they are being ungrateful.
They wonder if the ache will eventually go away.

But spiritual hunger is not always a problem.

Sometimes it is an invitation.

The Holy Spirit often begins by stirring desire before He shows the next step.

A desire to pray differently.
A desire to serve more freely.
A desire to be formed, not just inspired.
A desire to live as a disciple, not just admire discipleship from a distance.

Encounter School of Ministry speaks to that hunger.

It is for Catholics who sense that faith was meant to be lived with greater freedom, courage, and intimacy with God.

Not as something strange.

Not as something reserved for a select few.

But as part of ordinary Christian discipleship.

Sometimes the ache for “more” is not restlessness to ignore.

Sometimes it is the Lord gently saying:

“Come deeper.”

For a long time, I quietly assumed the gifts of the Holy Spirit were for holier people.

Braver people.

People with stronger personalities, more dramatic testimonies, or some obvious spiritual anointing I didn’t think I had.

I believed the Holy Spirit was real. I believed God could speak, heal, guide, and move.

But part of me still saw that kind of life as something meant for “those people.”

The really gifted ones.
The really confident ones.
The ones who seemed to know exactly what God was doing.

Not ordinary people like me.

Not someone who second-guesses.
Not someone who loves God but still feels unsure of how He answers prayer.

But over time, I started noticing how often Jesus called ordinary people.

Not the polished ones.

Ordinary people.

People who were willing.
People who were learning.
People who needed formation just as much as they needed faith.

And something about that began to shift the way I thought about my own life.

Maybe the question isn’t whether God only uses extraordinary people.

Maybe the question is whether ordinary people are willing to let Him form them.

That is one reason Encounter School of Ministry has been stirring something in me.

It doesn’t present the life of the Holy Spirit as distant or reserved for a few select people.

It presents it as part of discipleship.

Something to be received with humility.
Something to grow in.
Something to be formed in.

I find that both comforting and challenging.

Comforting, because maybe I don’t have to be “that type of person” to begin.

Challenging, because if God really does want to work through ordinary people, then maybe I don’t get to keep assuming He means everyone except me.

I’m still praying through all of that.

But I think I’m finally open to the possibility that the gifts of the Holy Spirit were never just for “other people.”

Maybe they’re part of the inheritance of the whole Church.

And maybe formation is one way we learn to receive them with wisdom, humility, and faith.

Encounter School of Ministry starts in September. Don’t miss the chance to explore the gifts of the Holy Spirit for yourself. Learn more today!
