James gives deep insight into real wisdom from the heart of Jesus here. This is a real heart check for our own walk today!
James aims at the heart here, specifically those who claim to be wise. In v13-18 he shows the difference between God’s definition and His enemies’ definition of wisdom, and the contrast is stark! In v 13 he tells us that if we’re wise we should show it by our good conduct and humble attitude, and then gives us a framework in our verse for what God’s wisdom looks like: it is pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, filled with mercy and good fruits, impartial, sincere.
Let’s picture the opposite to learn by contrast. Think of a “leader” whose “wise” life and philosophy is defiling. Brawling. Violent. Dogmatic. Full of judgment. Showcases bad outcomes. Partial to their own interests. Hypocritical. Sounds like an awful lot of me-first business and politics, right? Like a lot of current church scandals and pastor abuse, too. Sounds like the cause of a lot of family abuse. This might feel brash but is common.
To practice wisdom from Jesus, make this a filter to view the advice or idea through. Is it pure, centered on His kingdom or mine? Is it oriented toward peace and unity, or toward me winning and someone else losing? Is it gentle, or am I using force? Is it reasonable or am I demanding my perspective? Is it filled to the brim with mercy or does it make me the judge? Are there good fruits here for God, or is this all about me? Is the idea impartial or am I only sharing with those I like? Am I my authentic self here, or hiding behind a mask?
If it’s from God, you’ll be able to see Jesus in the answers if you are honest and don’t lie to yourself or others. Use this filter for wise living with discernment, grace, and love and watch your life start to look more like Jesus today!
