🔍 Have You Ever Noticed This Symbol in Our Church?

Mounted within the sanctuary of Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd is a beautiful ecclesiastical coat of arms rich with Christian meaning and centuries of Church tradition.

At first glance, it may appear to be simply decorative, but each element tells a story:

✝️ The Mitre (bishop's hat) at the top symbolizes the teaching and pastoral ministry of a bishop.

🐑 The Crozier (shepherd's staff) reminds us that bishops are called to shepherd God's people, following the example of Christ, the Good Shepherd.

✝️ The Processional Cross represents the proclamation of the Gospel and the authority of Christ over His Church.

🗝️ The Crossed Keys are an ancient symbol of St. Peter and the Church's apostolic foundation, recalling Jesus' words: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 16:19).

⭐ The Star often symbolizes divine guidance and the light of Christ shining in the world.

🦁 The Lion is a traditional Christian emblem of courage, strength, and kingship. In Christian art, it can also point to Christ, the "Lion of Judah."

📜 The Motto: Sub Cruce Veritas translated from Latin, it means: "Under the Cross, Truth."

This beautiful phrase reminds Christians that God's truth is revealed most fully in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The design itself belongs to a tradition known as ecclesiastical heraldry, which has been used by bishops, dioceses, cathedrals, and Christian institutions for nearly a thousand years. These coats of arms serve as visual sermons, teaching the faith through symbols.

Next time you pass this emblem, take a moment to reflect on its message: Under the Cross, we find the Truth.

Have you met our Rector, The Reverend Elmer S. Miguel and his family?

Fr. Elmer Miguel, his wife Holly, and their four children, Ana, Asher, Alister, and August, have been with us for three years!

Fr. Elmer most recently served at HopePointe Anglican Church in The Woodlands, Texas, where he ministered as deacon and assisting priest. His lifelong passion for ministry began as a church musician at age eight and has included church planting, discipleship, missions work in South America, teaching, and pastoral leadership.

A former U.S. Marine infantry squad leader who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, Fr. Elmer also holds degrees in psychology and pastoral ministry and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree.

As a family, the Miguels love playing music, taking road trips, watching movies, exploring antique stores, and enjoying board games together. Fr. Elmer also enjoys fishing, hunting, woodworking, and playing guitar.

We are grateful to have them with us and look forward to getting to many years of service alongside them. ❤️🙏🏻

When Love Requires Correction: Jesus on Sin, Repentance, and Restoration.

Many Christians know Jesus' words, “Where two or three are gathered in my name...” but often miss the context in which He spoke them.

In Matthew 18, Our Lord teaches the Church how to confront sin, pursue reconciliation, and restore broken relationships. Far from being harsh, biblical correction is an act of love aimed at healing the Body of Christ and leading souls toward repentance and salvation.

This sermon explores Christ's teaching on binding and loosing, the role of the Church in accountability, and Ezekiel's image of the sentinel who sounds the warning for God's people.

How should Christians respond when a brother or sister sins? How do we balance truth and mercy? And what responsibility do church leaders carry before God?

The Martyrs of New Guinea: A Witness of Faith, Sacrifice, and Forgiveness

The story of the Martyrs of New Guinea is one of the most powerful testimonies of Christian faithfulness in the twentieth century.

During the Second World War, Anglican missionaries and Papuan Christians remained among the people they served despite the dangers of war and occupation. Their ministry of healing, teaching, and evangelism continued even as persecution intensified.

Many were captured and killed. Yet their witness did not end in death. One of the Papuan martyrs, Lucian Tapiedi, is remembered among the modern martyrs honored at Westminster Abbey. His legacy became an extraordinary testimony to the power of the Gospel when the man responsible for his death later converted to Christianity, received baptism, and built a church in Lucian's memory.

This feast day also commemorates the countless Papuan Christians who risked their own safety to care for the wounded and protect those in danger. Their courage reminds us that the Church is strongest when believers remain faithful to Christ in times of trial.

May we learn from their example of sacrificial love, steadfast faith, and Christian forgiveness.
