What a special morning on Saturday May 9th in Central Park as friends, family, and community members gathered to celebrate the life and service of our dearly loved Gwen Woirhaye. The Whittier Conservancy dedicated a circle of benches in honor of Gwen and her many years of care, leadership, and commitment to the Whittier community. We were grateful to hear beautiful reflections shared by Mary from the Conservancy and Mayor James Becerra in recognition of Gwen’s lasting impact.

The next time you’re in Uptown, take a moment to sit, rest, and enjoy the bench circle in her memory 🤍

In remembrance of Yosh

Yoshio Nakamura lived a century of service, artistry and quiet courage. One of the last surviving members of the famed Japanese American 442nd regiment, Nakamura fought fascism abroad even as his own family was incarcerated at Gila River.

After the war, he became a beloved teacher, mentor and arts leader whose impact can still be felt across Whittier and the San Gabriel Valley. His work hangs in the Guggenheim and the Smithsonian, but his greatest legacy may be the generations of students he inspired.
