Praying humbly in our Father's will:
Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 37) And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38) Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
39)And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt (Matthew 26:36-39).
How the LORD taught us to pray:
5) And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6) But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7) But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8) Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9) After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10) Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11) Give us this day our daily bread.
12) And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
14) For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15) But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses (Matthew 6: 5-15).
Let us humbly pray then, in the Father's will, just as Jesus modeled for us.
You may ask, but didn't Jesus say, "And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. 24) Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full (John 16:23,24)?
Yes, He did, but we must always remember not to isolate scripture. We must compare and take into context the full meaning of God's Holy Word, comparing scripture to scripture. We must seek His will when we ask in the Name of Jesus. We let our requests be known before God with humble and contrite hearts.
Notice in the preceeding verses that Jesus tells us to "ask" and not "claim" as the modernists do. If we claim something for ourselves that is not in the Father's will, it is selfish, arrogant, and rude. How dare we "claim" and expect God to do our bidding?
We should have a heart-attitude of "Thy will be done in earth as it is in Heaven." He knows best. Let us bow our knees and our hearts to Him in submission. He knows the end from the beginning. He is Sovereign. We are not.
