Today, there was a brick on the roof of our church van.
Not a big deal, I suppose, had that brick not been used to smash our windshield sometime between Sunday and today and left like a relic of some holy war waged by whoever tossed it.
It’s unfortunate really. We use that bus to pick up a hand full of children each week. We love on them. Give them snacks. Play games with them. Teach them about Jesus. We do it all with the permission of their loved ones, so it’s not like we are leading a religious inquisition. We are just trying to lead lives of obedience to our God and Savior. And this senseless act prevented all of that.
We aren’t really sure who did it. Or why. Maybe it was a childish joke or an act of defiance against God. None of that really matters to this post. We will replace the windshield. We will continue to run our route. Our bus will continue to pick up kiddos and bring them to church.
This post isn’t about the who or the why. This post is simply to say: we forgive you. But beyond that, you are welcome here. We have coffee and breakfast before service on Sundays, and we will save a cup and plate for you. Afraid of sitting by yourself? Pull up a chair next to me. I sit on the left of the sanctuary as you come in. I’m the pastor. You can worship with me. Have questions? I’ll stay after service and I’ll answer what ever you ask to the best of my ability. But here is a little secret, I don’t know everything. Don’t pretend to. Nor am I perfect. Far from it. But I serve a Savior who is and He loves you so much that He willingly died for your sins.
He died for broken windows and the intent of your heart.
He died, taking the cup of wrath intended to be poured out justly upon our heads, and drank it. Buying our pardon. Purchasing Himself a people.
Today there was a brick on the roof of our church van, but because there was a cross at Calvary and today there is an empty tomb, we can say: We forgive you and your invited…to church…to our family….to taste and see that the Lord is good.
