Looking for Signs of Hope and Promise
From: The Wounded Healer: Ministry in Contemporary Society
More than anything else, [the contemplative critic] will look for signs of hope and promise in the situation in which he finds himself…. He knows that if there is hope for a better world in the future the signs must be visible in the present, and he will never curse the now in favor of the later. He is not a naive optimist who expects his frustrated desires to be satisfied in the future, nor a bitter pessimist who keeps repeating that the past has taught him that there is nothing new under the sun; he is rather a man of hope who lives with the unshakable conviction that now he is seeing a dim reflection in a mirror, but that one day he will see the future face to face.

Henri Nouwen
Reflection Question: How will you resist being anxious for the future and focus on hope in the present?

By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
- 1 Peter 1:3

Getting to the Heart of the Matter
From: The Wounded Healer: Ministry in Contemporary Society
The contemplative is not needy or greedy for human contacts, but is guided by a vision of what he has seen beyond the trivial concerns of a possessive world. He does not bounce up and down with the fashions of the moment, because he is in contact with what is basic, central and ultimate. He does not allow anybody to worship idols, and he constantly invites his fellow man to ask real, often painful and upsetting questions, to look behind the surface of smooth behavior, and to take away all the obstacles that prevent him from getting to the heart of the matter. The contemplative critic takes away the illusory mask of the manipulative world and has the courage to show what the true situation is.

Henri Nouwen

Reflection Question: Where might you be called to have the courage to show what the true situation is?

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
- Galatians 5:25

Heart Speaks to Heart
From: The Road to Peace
The spiritual life means that the Spirit of Love is given to us so that we can live with that Spirit within us. With that Spirit in us, we are able to recognize the same Spirit in the world. The Spirit blows where it wants, so the Spirit is everywhere. It's in the people who are dying, people with AIDS, people who are broken, and people with disabilities.
To watch for Christ in the world is to see that the spirit within us recognizes the Spirit among us so that the spirit speaks to Spirit, heart speaks to Heart, love speaks to Love. To watch for Christ is to be attentive to the presence of Christ in the world and in our heart. It's not a kind of emotional or intellectual gymnastics. If we carry God in our hearts, we see God in the world.

Henri Nouwen
Reflection Question: How might you recognize the Spirit in your world today?

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
- Psalm 90: 2

God bless us Church on this our Feast Day. We are named after the Sacred Heart so let us rejoice and celebrate by sharing each others burdens This happens when the two communities that make up our church place a yoke on their shoulders so that we walk straight together sharing each others burdens and joys.
