The light in their eyes James E. Faust
October 31, 2010
“I recently recalled a historic meeting in Jerusalem about 17 years ago. It was regarding the lease for the land on which the Brigham Young University’s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies was later built. Before this lease could be signed, President Ezra Taft Benson and Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, then president of Brigham Young University, agreed with the Israeli government on behalf of the Church and the university not to proselyte in Israel. You might wonder why we agreed not to proselyte. We were required to do so in order to get the building permit to build that magnificent building which stands in the historic city of Jerusalem. To our knowledge the Church and BYU have scrupulously and honorably kept that non-proselyting commitment. After the lease had been signed, one of our friends insightfully remarked, ‘Oh, we know that you are not going to proselyte, but what are you going to do about the light that is in their eyes?’ He was referring to our students who were studying in Israel.

What was that light in their eyes which was so obvious to our friend? The Lord Himself gives the answer: ‘And the light which shineth, which giveth you light, is through him who enlighteneth your eyes, which is the same light that quickeneth your understandings.’ (D&C 88:11) Where did that light come from? Again the Lord gives the answer: ‘I am the true light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world.’ (D&C 93:2) The Lord is the true light, ‘and the Spirit enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit.’ (D&C 84:46) This light shows in our countenances as well as in our eyes.
Paul Harvey, a famous news commentator, visited one of our Church school campuses some years ago. Later he observed: ‘Each ... young face mirrored a sort of ... sublime assurance. These days many young eyes are prematurely old from countless compromises with conscience. But [these young people] have that enviable headstart which derives from discipline, dedication, and consecration.’
Those who truly repent receive the Spirit of Christ and are baptized into this Church unto the remission of their sins. Hands are laid upon their heads, and through the priesthood of God they receive the Holy Ghost. It is ‘the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him.’(1 Ne. 10:17) As Elder Parley P. Pratt characterized it, the gift of the Holy Ghost is, “as it were, ... joy to the heart, [and] light to the eyes.”
What are we doing to keep the light shining in our own eyes and countenances? Much of that light comes from our discipline, dedication, and consecration to some important absolutes. The foremost of these absolutes is that there is a God who is the Father of our souls to whom we account for our actions. Second, that Jesus is the Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. Third, that the great plan of happiness requires obedience to God’s commandments. Fourth, that the greatest gift of God is eternal life.
Service in this Church is a marvelous blessing and privilege that brings light to our eyes and our countenances. As the Savior recommended, ‘Let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.’ (3 Nephi 12:16) Words cannot express the blessings that come to us through service in this Church. The Lord promises that if we magnify our callings we will find happiness and joy.
Alma asks if we have received His image in our countenances. (Alma 5:14) A sacred light comes to our eyes and countenances when we have a personal bond with our loving Heavenly Father and His Son, our Savior and Redeemer. With this bond our faces will mirror that ‘sublime assurance’ that He lives.”

Two missionaries in Munich, Germany, knocked on an old wooden door. The lady of the house said something to them that they had not heard in a long time; she said, "Come in!" One of the elders was so startled at her enthusiasm that he quipped, "Do you know who we are?"
She said, "You want to talk about religion, don't you?"
He said, 'Yes, we do!"
She said, "Oh, come in! I've been watching you walk around the neighborhood. I'm so excited to have you here! Please, come into my study."

In the study she sat down behind a large desk and considered the missionaries with a faint smile. Then she pointed to the three doctoral degrees hanging over her head: one in theology, the study of religion; one in philosophy, the study of ideas; and one in European history, specializing in Christianity.

"You see the row books right here?" The missionaries viewed a well-displayed set of books. "I wrote them all. I am the theology professor at the University of Munich and have been doing this for forty-one years. I would love to talk about religion." Then, almost rubbing her hands together, she asked, "what would you like to discuss?"

The young missionary, seeking inspiration, replied, "We would like to talk about the Book of Mormon."
"I don't know anything about the Book of Mormon."
"Good!"
Twenty minutes later the elders walked out of the room, having presented her a Book of Mormon. Some weeks later the same lady was in a small room filled with people dressed in white.

The well-known theology professor stood up in front of the small congregation of people and said, "Before I am baptized today, I would like to tell you my feelings. In Amos 8:11, it says there will be a famine in the last days. Not a famine of food or drink, but a famine of the word of God. I have been in that famine for over seventy years. Why do you think I have three Ph.D.'s? I have been hungering for the truth and striving to find it, but I have not been satisfied." She went on to say, "But then a few weeks ago two young men walked into my home. I want you to know that these elders are very nice and wonderful young men, but they did not convert me. They couldn't. They didn't know enough." Then she smiled and said, "But since that day they came to my door, I have read the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, all of James E. Talmage's writings, Evidences and Reconciliations by John A. Widtsoe and twenty-one other volumes of Church doctrine."

She then stated, "I don't think you members of the Church realize what you have." Then in her quiet, powerful way, she said, "After years of studying philosophy, I have picked up the Doctrine and Covenants and read a few little verses that answered some of the greatest questions that Aristotle and Socrates proposed years ago. When I read those verses, I wept for the years I studied without the foundation of truth. I don't know why I had to wait so long, but I know I will never take these magnificent teachings lightly."

Again she said, "I don't think you members know what you have. Do you understand that the world is in famine? Do you know that the world is starving for what we have? I have been like a starving person being led to a feast. Over the past few weeks, I have been able to feast in a way I've never known possible before."

After delivering her powerful message and challenging questions, she ended her testimony with her favorite scripture: "For don't you see? 'The truth shall make you free' (John 8:32). These missionaries do not simply represent membership in the Church; they carry within their hands the power to make the atonement of Jesus Christ a full force in my life. Today I am going in the water and I am going to make covenants with Christ for the first time with the proper authority. I have wanted to do this all my life."

Have you ever experienced a famine of truth in your life? What was it like?, how did you overcome that?

Why does The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have temples?

For Latter-day Saints, a temple is different from other Church buildings. The temple is a place where Latter-day Saints receive special instruction about God and Jesus Christ. In the temple, members make eternal covenants (or promises) with God. This includes promises to keep the commandments, live the gospel of Jesus Christ, be faithful in marriage, and to help take care of each other by sharing what we have.

Also, because we believe families are forever, much of the work done inside temples is to make family bonds even stronger. Marriages in the temple are performed to last eternally, not just “until death do you part.” Parents and children become eternal families in temples. Ancestors can also receive all the blessings of the temple if someone performs the sacred ordinances in their behalf and they accept that act of service. Temples are busy places!
