The bedrock of faith...
..Of the world's inventions, Johannes Gutenberg's 1440 AD printing press is among the world's most monumental. The first mass produced automated printed literature beamed out to the world from Mainz, Germany in 1455. The estimated 180 copies of the Latin Gutenberg Bible was the dawn of the emergence from the profound darkness of the Middle-Aged deadening religion, superstition, and theological ignorance. From Gutenberg's press, beamed the laser of Reformation. Within a mere 62 years, Martin Luther would pound his 95 Theses into the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg.

6 Billion copies later, THE BOOK is still transforming lives and culture throughout the world.

The bedock for faith...

"Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God."

It's been said, "We feel what we feel, say what we say, and do what we do because we think what we think; and we think what we think because we believe what we believe." Our Creator's Love Letter is the unmovable bedrock for profitable, impactful living. Apart from it, we'll sadly grope and stumble through life in theological darkness. His Revelation illuminates our hearts and minds that we might be liberated from the chains of self and selfishness and thereby, "enter into the joy of the Lord." Our Creator's loving revelation is able to, "make (us) wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

God's Word is inspired, inerrant, and authoritative - "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteerouness, that the (person) of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." Well, Haldor Lillenas put these lyrics to melody in 1917...

"The Bible stands like a rock undaunted mid' the raging storms of time;
Its pages burn with the truth eternal, and they glow with a light sublime!

The Bible stands every test we give it, for its Author is divine;
By grace alone I expect to live it, and to prove it, and to make it mine!

The Bible stands though the hills may tumble,
It will firmly stand when the earth shall crumble,
I will plant my feet on its firm foundation,
For the Bible stands!"

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away." - Jesus Christ

How about us? Do we believe, "the Bible stands"? Will we "plant (our) feet on its firm foundation?" Have we allowed its precious promises to, "make (us) wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus"? Will we, "by grace alone expect to live it, and to prove it, and to make it (ours)"? Do we regularly pick up this Holy Book and cherish it's blessed pages? Are we, "diligent to present (ourselves) approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth"? Are we finding in it the comfort, hope, encouragement, conviction, guidance, strength, courage, and theological knowledge that our loving benevolent Creator intends for us to possess? Do we meditate and memorize its life transforming realities that we might "be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work"? Is it our personal theological bedrock for faith and practice? Let us therefore...
.."Continue in the things which (we) have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom (we) have learned them...the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make (us) wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

This Memorial Day, We remember...

According to Oxford, the noun, memorial, means, "something - especially a structure like a statue or stone - established to remind people of a famous person who has died or an important past event."

By an act of congress in 1971, the last Monday of May, has been designated to be a day of remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their county.

What do the names Robert Monroe, Elijah Hayden, Henry Gunther, Harman L Tredway, Burl Mullins, Charles Seaborn Abel, Marshal D Roberts, Rafel Celebudzki, and Jesus Christ have in common?...
..Each gave their lives for the benefit of others:

Monroe - The Revolutionary War
Hayden - The Civil War
Gunther - WWI
Tredway - WWII
Mullins - The Korean War
Abel - The Vietnam War
Roberts - The Iraqi War
Celbudzki - The war in Afghanistan
Jesus Christ - The War for Humanity

The over one million Americans who died in these and other national conflicts remind us that freedom comes with an incalculable price tag.

Though we may, or may not, personally know one who gave his life in defense of his/her country, we'd do well to reflect upon its cost this Memorial Day Weekend. Our Creator summoned Israel to such a remembrance in the celebration of the Passover in which a lamb paid the ultimate sacrifice for their freedom...
.."And you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever. It will come to pass when you come to the land which the LORD will give you, just as He promised, that you shall keep this service. And it shall be, when your children say to you, 'What do you mean by this service?' that you shall say, 'It is the passover sacrifice of the LORD, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt..."

The passover lamb of the Hebrew exodus typified the sinless One - the God-man, Warrior of warriors, Hero of heroes - who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of people the world over - Israel, Egypt, America, etc., etc! His life and perfect offering accomplished that which none other could - the reconciliation of God with man! "He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed...the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."

We remember...

While this Memorial Day we may not decorate a grave marker, or attend a parade - each of us can consider paying tribute to those "who paid the ultimate price" by leveraging our freedoms for the glory of God and the benefit of those around us. Since we learn from the past, live in the present, and hope for the future, remembrance of the sacred past is indispensable to maximizing our priceless present. Let us reflect upon those who died that we might be free, in order to live for Him who died for us! Our Heavenly Father reminds those of us whose spiritual freedom has been purchased by THE passover Lamb on Calvary's cross...
.."and walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma...for you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another."

What's the good word?

In the words of the Sage...
.."Heaviness in the heart of man makes it stoop: but a good word makes it glad."

He had been concerned about his young friend. Circumstances had previously been favorable for him. He had a wife and two boys. Possessing common sense and a work ethic bar none, this entrepreneur netted great money. Then things went south. His young wife ran off with another man crossing state lines, taking their two sons with her. After she broke him of all, he became trodden, passive, and despondent.

Burdened for his companion, he picked up his cell and punched in his number...
.."Hey, Brother I don't know why, but the Lord laid you on my heart and really impressed me to call you. I don't have anything in particular to say, just that I love you and we are praying for you. God's got this...(called him by his nickname)."

His friend responded, "(So and so), thank you for the phone call. I won't go into any details but you'll never know what this phone call just meant to me."

Six months later at a church family night, the man gave testimony that he had a revolver in his mouth and was about to pull the trigger when the phone rang. He thought he would give God one more opportunity to help with the pain he was going through, and "it was brother (so and so) who had called to tell him, 'he loved me and was praying for me and that God had this'...I put the gun down."

"I put the gun down."

Consider the impact of this timely, caring, compassionate, and encouraging word! The brief, timely, encouraging telephone call was the turning point for this defeated man. He would go on to rebuild a successful business, be reunited with his boys, and be an encouragement to those around him!

So, what's "a good word"?

"I put the gun down." Yeah buddy - "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat it's fruit."

"A good word" is encouraging, motivational, instructional, thankful, exhortative, praise oriented, edifying, lovingly truthful, hopeful, patient, and kind.

How about it? Are we carriers of good linguistics? Are we consciously prudent concerning the use of our tongues? Do we consider the impact of our words before we open our mouths? We just never know of the positive influence of what we say, and how we say it, might have on those around us. Perhaps we just might be the messenger our loving Creator uses to direct some hurting soul to embrace "His mercy and grace to help in time of need." Will we deliver good words today being ever mindful...
.."Heaviness in the heart of man makes it stoop:but a good word makes it glad."

What's in our garden?

Spring is for gardens. Be they flower beds or vegetables...many of us are digging, mulching, hoeing, weeding, planting. Every gardener ponders their harvest prior to sowing. What are we planting...cucumbers, tomatoes, mint, green beans, strawberries, squash, or peppers? Every gardener sows in anticipation of some profitable harvest!

Principles of sowing and reaping apply in the spiritual realm as well. Seeking a desirable spiritual harvest from the early church in Galatia - inspired - the Apostle Paul wrote..."Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit, reap everlasting life." The declaration oozes accountability. Make no mistake about it - our Creator is serious about us living lives that please Him for His glory, the benefit of others, and for our own betterment. Are we sowing spiritual weeds through our "flesh", or instead, good "fruit" through God's Spirit who indwells His own?

His admonition is at once, both sobering and hopeful.

Every gardener is aware that they reap what they sow and therefore, sow accordingly. The Gardener of gardener seeks good fruit from the seeds of His Word He has sowed in our hearts.

Consider the profitable fruit of "sowing to the Spirit" - "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." The Holy Spirit, not self-reliance, is key to profitable fruit bearing. "Love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" are only possible through yielding to God in accordance with the principles and commands delineated in His Love Letter to us.

Conversely, if we sow to the flesh we can expect the undesirable weeds of "adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like.'' Such weeds can only be "pulled" through repentance, confession, and application of the precious sacrifice of our sinless Savior.

God's Spirit has been bequeathed to those who've received Christ by faith empowering them to produce spiritual fruit. Bountiful harvests result as His children obediently yielding to His inner promptings which are always consistent with Biblical teachings. Conversely the "flesh" is that insatiable inner force which opposes the rule of God in our inner man.

So what are we planting in our spiritual garden? If we sow to the flesh, we "will of the flesh reap corruption", but if, on the other hand, "(we) sow to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life." While not regenerated (born again) by means of our sowing, our spiritual harvest should manifest our having been regenerated.

So, what's in our garden? Let us...
.."Not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will, of the Spirit, reap everlasting life...and let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."
