What is the main goal of being a Christian? Is it to stop living the wrong way and start living the right way? To be a better person? To be a more loving person? Is it to avoid God’s judgment in the afterlife? While there isn’t one single right answer to this question, one of the ultimate goals and hopes of becoming a Christian is to be spiritual–specifically to “live life by the Spirit” as one saint said. The goal is to be filled with the same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and to learn to be guided and changed by the Spirit daily. When we do this, we’ll live better; we’ll be more loving; we’ll live more in our purpose and gifts. But we won’t do it by performing or acting. We’ll do it organically, authentically, genuinely from the inside out, from a heart that has been changed.

We want to bless the community through partnerships 🔥

Did you know we have focus areas throughout the year to help us do this better? 💪

For April & May, our focus has been mental health and recovery. If you haven't checked out Upstream Prevention, Inc., please do! Follow them on social media, support their work and consider plugging in with them.

For June & July, we'll be focusing on food insecurity. One of our primary partners to work with will be Interchurch Food Pantry of Johnson County.

Let's keep making a lasting impact together!

We are destined to be like this multiplying offering—people who receive an abundant supply of grace as an offering from Jesus and who pour that out abundantly into others

Something extraordinary about God’s beautiful and mysterious design for humankind is that we can see who we are as people–with all of our unique intricacies, strengths and flaws–from the time we are very small. In some ways, we are who we are from the beginning. And yet, another perhaps even more extraordinary feature of the relationship into which we’re called with God through Jesus is that we can always transform and become more of the glorious person God has called us to be. We are always the same in God, always changing by the power of the Spirit.

No one can do something about everything.
But everyone is called and gifted by Jesus to do something about something.
In Christ's kingdom, everyone has a place.
What's your something?
How can you empower someone else to find theirs?

There’s something we say sometimes at HEC: No one can do something about everything, but each of us is gifted and called to do something about something. This reality indicates that we can experience frustration in a couple of different ways. One, our lives can be frustrating when we’re living far from our unique purpose and calling–we’re not doing that special something about something we can do. Two, our lives can be frustrating when we’re dabbling in our unique purpose, but we’re also dabbling in many other things–we’re doing a little bit of everything about everything. When we grow in our personalities, strengths, weaknesses and purposes with the help of the Spirit–and empower others likewise–there is a growing peace and joy that comes with it.

Gut instinct is great, except when it’s not. Peter was a fisherman who met a guy named Jesus and accepted an invitation to follow him. He left his nets and the life he knew, presumably because he was drawn to something in Jesus and was inspired to make a shift. After following him for a while, Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus says Peter is blessed, calls him, “Rock,” and states that he will be foundational in what Jesus is building. Later, Jesus shares about the dark days ahead that will lead to the cross and the resurrection. Peter declares this will never happen. Jesus says, “Get behind me Satan” and calls him a stumbling block. A stumbling block or a cornerstone? Which is Peter actually? Perhaps Peter carries elements of both in his personality. Perhaps his faith and impulsivity and gut reactions are what made him such a great candidate to lead the early church. Perhaps as he grew with Spirit, Peter learned how to better lean into his strengths and weaknesses and how to lead from both. Perhaps his weaknesses reminded him of the growth he needed and taught him how to stay aligned with the Holy Spirit. Perhaps Peter’s experience is a common human experience - we are complex people with strengths and weaknesses. Being aware of both keeps us humble and going and growing with Jesus.

EVERYONE HAS A PLACE 🔥 As each of us takes our place with Jesus and grow in the Spirit, we wake up to our unique gifting as an apostle, prophet, evangelist and/or teacher (and these words aren't what you think they are, probably).

Ask 3-5 people who know you well which of these they think is your leading gifting? Obviously these words are not easily relatable, which is why we created the slides. Also, you can check out where Ross talked about each of them here: https://www.youtube.com/live/7nkg9OofoGM?si=6pVXEPQCvEP4zPS_&t=2015

From the beginning of his world-changing ministry, Jesus demonstrated that everyone has a place in his mission. Where Jesus (and the Bible as a whole) are unique in their perspective about life and leadership and purpose is that the most important thing for every person to live in their true self and their strengths is…the heart. Jesus comes to reveal God’s heart and to transform our hearts so we become who we truly are in God and so we reflect the love of Christ to a world that needs it. In addition to this, the Bible also makes it clear that each of us is uniquely gifted with strengths to contribute to the transformation of the world with Jesus. Everyone has a place, and each of us has been given something important to contribute and share. We’re going to talk about discovering this and living in it more fully.
Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-16

There are psychological perspectives that basically say we are who are from a very young age–that our personalities are basically what they will be to a large extent as early as the age of 3 or 5. Other perspectives argue that most people’s personalities will change dramatically into old age. So, what makes us…us? We’re starting a new series called … To start, we’re going to explore how there are some things that are true about us–that make us who we are–from the time we are in our mother’s wombs, but there are many other things that we will grow into and become that are quite unknown from a young age.
