I wanted to share some bullet points on the Holy Spirit as we approach 50 days after Easter, Pentecost, as most Christians call it. Pentecost commemorates the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples waiting for Him in the upper room.
Jesus told the disciples to wait for this gift in Acts 1:4-5 here is what He says: "On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: 'Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'"
Pentecost originally was celebrated as a festival of weeks commemorating the receipt of another gift the Law of God. See my previous post on the law of God.
For now, here are some bullet points on the Holy Spirit.
• God is one.
• God exists in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit.
• Each person is fully God, co-equal and co-eternal.
Biblical support for the Holy Spirit as God can be found in several passages. Here are a few:
• Acts 5:3–4 – Peter confronts Ananias for lying to the Holy Spirit and then says, “You have not lied to men but to God,” equating the Holy Spirit with God.
• 1 Corinthians 3:16 – “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” This implies that the Spirit’s indwelling is the same as God’s presence.
• 2 Corinthians 3:17 – “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
• Matthew 28:19 – Jesus commands baptism “in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” placing the Spirit on equal footing with the Father and the Son.
Also, the Bible attributes divine qualities to the Holy Spirit:
• Omniscience (1 Corinthians 2:10–11)
• Omnipresence (Psalm 139:7–8)
• Eternality (Hebrews 9:14)
• Creator role (Genesis 1:2; Job 33:4)
