A Message from Our Ministers in This Time of Grief and Solidarity 🕊️

Every spring the children at Community Unitarian Universalist Congregation in White Plains conduct an environmental survey about the life and health of the streams on our property. They measure the air and water temperature and how fast the water is flowing. Then they put packs of leaves in the streams to serve as homes and food for aquatic organisms and insects. After a month, they retrieve and inspect the packets and then return the insects to the streams. Can you identify some of the organisms they found?

Please join us after the service on Sunday, May 10, for a book talk and signing with Seth S. Tannenbaum, local author and sports historian, who will discuss his new book, Bleacher Seats and Luxury Suites: Democracy and Division at the Twentieth-Century Ballpark. Tracing the journey from the urban locales of the Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium through the suburban-oriented Dodger Stadium and Houston Astrodome to the cloistered fantasy of city life offered by Camden Yards, Tannenbaum revises the persistent myth of the ballpark as an egalitarian melting pot. The event will be held in CUUC’s Fellowship Hall at 468 Rosedale Avenue, White Plains, from 11:45 am-12:45 pm.

As one of CUUC’s seven Social Justice Teams, our Reproductive Justice Team affirms the belief that all people have the right to maintain bodily autonomy, decide whether and when to have children, and to raise their children in safe and sustainable communities. This work includes supporting local efforts to provide families with essential supplies. As part of our Religious Exploration activities, children and adults from the congregation assembled 200 kits of menstrual supplies for 914 Cares’ Period Project, which distributes supplies to community organizations throughout Westchester.

As UUs, we work to build a world in which all people are able to make choices about their bodies, their health, and their families. Please join us on Sunday, May 3, for a community forum on reproductive justice led by Catherine Lederer-Plaskett, President and Chair of WCLA-Choice Matters. She will share how all of us can make an impact right here in New York State and Westchester County. The event will be held at 11:30 am at 468 Rosedale Avenue, White Plains. https://cuucwp.org/ -worship-service

On Earth Day, UUs celebrate our core value of interdependence between humans and the natural world. Our congregation sits on over eight acres of woodlands, which supports many species, including this pileated woodpecker. We care for the land through our Environmental Practices Group, Placekeeping activities, and Religious Exploration program, honoring the interdependent web of existence year-round.
